(Please note that this year, we are holding an IN-PERSON OUTDOOR EVENT! Read on for additional details and a note on masking, CDC guidelines, and vaccinations below…)
What is the Mosby Woods Turkey Trot & Sidewalk Stroll? A low-key Fun Run/walk through our neighborhood to celebrate our community and neighbors, families, health, friendship, and the spirit of the holiday — as well as a chance to support our neighbors in need. There is no formal entry fee for this event, but all participants are asked to contribute at least one (preferably much more than just one) non-perishable food item as their “entry fee.” All non-perishables received will be donated to the Food For Others food bank in Merrifield nearby. Non-participant spectators can donate food items for FFO too!
Suggested age limits: Anyone aged 2-102 can participate. (If you are outside this age range but still want to participate, we’ll make an exception for you!)
When does it occur? Following 2020’s virtual event, in 2021 we are again holding this event in-person, on Thanksgiving morning, November 25. A 1K kids’ run will start at 8:30am, followed by the main 5K event at 9:00am. Not to worry…all participants and support volunteers will be able to return to their kitchens by 10:00 that morning!
Where is it held? The start/finish this year will be at Draper Drive Park, which is adjacent to the Mosby Woods neighborhood of Fairfax City. This wide open space includes a large parking lot, a restroom facility, and LOTS of room to permit comfortable spacing and social distancing. (See “Distancing” section below for more details.)
All registered participants will receive:
What can I contribute as my virtual entry fee? It is important to shop & donate items generously, as our local area has seen tremendous hardship for many families over the past year. The pain that families in poverty face grows more acute in the holiday months of November and December. FFO accepts all non-perishables, but particularly welcomes the following types of items:
Masking, Distancing, and CDC Guidelines: The event organizers are mindful of the ongoing spread of viruses, and are taking the below precautions to ensure a SAFE and fun event for all.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Given the low-key (and virtual) nature of this event, no roads will be closed for this event. Rather, the suggested run/walk course consists entirely of paved sidewalks, paved/gravel trails, and safe street crossings. The 1K kids’ run course is held within the park itself, and the 5K course encompasses a number of beautiful locations in our neighborhood!
