The Fall Backyard Burn (SBYB) is a series of 5 and 10 mile trail running races held on some of the best trail networks in the Northern Virginia Area. All the courses include a mixture of forested fire roads, twisty hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement.

Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County. This awesome race course is beautiful and consists of hiking trails and a few old dirt roads.  We’ve been racing at Fountainhead for almost 15 years now…and it continues to be a racer favorite.

Racing Over 2-Days and Staggered Check-in and Start Times
We are hosting the race on both Saturday (11/21) and Sunday (11/22) morning. Check-in times will be staggered from 7:15am to 9:15am each day. 10 mile runners will check-in between 7:15am and 8:00am and 5 mile runners will check-in between 8:15am and 9:15am.

  • We would like to group the 10-mile runners with a pace sub 10-minute per mile pace in the 7:15am to 7:30am check-in group.
  • We would like to group the 5-mile runners with a pace sub 10-minute per mile pace in the 8:15am to 8:30am check-in group.
  • We'll be starting small groups of about 10 runners every 5 minutes.

Our charity partner for this event is Homestretch.  If you are able, please consider making a donation to this amazing organization during registration.

A summary of our precautions are below.

  • Check-in times will be staggered from 7:15am to 9:15am each day. 10 mile runners will check-in between 7:15am and 8:00am and 5 mile runners will check-in between 8:15 and 9:15am.
  • Each check-in group will be limited 25 people.
  • Groups 10 people will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
  • Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
  • It is expected that each runner is ready to run when they check-in.  Please warm up and use the bathroom before you check-in.
  • Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
  • Race giveaways (T-shirt) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be smaller than normal.
  • Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
  • Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
  • Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn't have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
  • Aid stations are staffed for safety only - no water will be provided with the exception of one water refill station at about the halfway point on the course.
  • Athletes are required to carry their own hydration.
  • There is no post-race awards ceremony.
  • Runners are not allowed to stay after the race except to cool down.
  • Spectators are not allowed.
  • Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
  • Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
  • All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.
