After discussion with our club officers, club members, Virginia RRCA State Representative Grattan Garbee, Bedford County Parks and Recreation, and our timing services Mountain Junkies LLC, we have decided to CANCEL Twisted Trail 10k for 2020. We want to share with you the reasons behind our decision.
Blue Ridge Trail Runners has a logo that we display on almost everything we distribute or share. Most people are drawn to the mountains in the background, and rightfully so as the mountains in our area are phenomenal. But underneath the text are three core values we hold:
Trails ∙ Community ∙ Fellowship
With a virtual race or postponed race, in the current climate, we can only provide one of these values for our runners: trails. Thankfully the trails at New London have stayed open throughout these past two months. The New London Tech Trails have been a haven for many and an escape for a lot of people, especially as the Candlers Mountain Trail System restricted usage.
When I race, I love getting to the race early and seeing how people look. Some people look eager, some look a little nervous, and some have the “eye of the tiger”. I chat and warmup with my “frienemies” – my friends off the course who I’m trying to best on the course. After the race is over, I enjoy walking back along the course and cheering runners in or catching up with runners who bested me and wishing them congratulations. These are both community and fellowship aspects of racing that we cannot provide in the current time, and we don’t see these changing anytime soon.
But most importantly, we cannot guarantee the health of our volunteers and runners. There have been lots of improvements made to keep ourselves healthy and information distributed. We’ve read articles and seen small races occur. The amount of work that goes into producing these events is astounding and exemplary. As a community of volunteers and not professionals, we simply lack the manpower to produce an event that effectively minimizes the risk. More than that, even the most immaculately produced events cannot eliminate all risk.
In summation, we want people to continue exercising and running. We may present some sort of “challenge series” and are discussing ideas to help motivate club members. We encourage you to continue exercising safely, and hopefully we will see Twisted Trail 10k make a return in 2021.
Come run on the New London Tech Trails at the 2nd annual Twisted Trail 10k. Stay afterward for age group awards, food, and a raffle with prizes from several area businesses.
We have a great location lined up - nice trail system - and gracious hosts with the Bedford County Parks and Recreation.
Come run one of Bedford County's newest and nicest trail systems.
New for 2020!!
Twisted Trail 10k is the RRCA VA State Cross Country Championship. We are very excited to be part of the VA State Championship Series of Races!
In addition, this year we will have both male and female shirt sizes, instead of unisex sizing. Make sure you take this into account when you register.
We are VERY excited to host the 2020 Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Virginia State Cross Country Championship!
Especially exciting is showing the state of Virginia our "neck of the woods" here in Forest, a great community in Bedford County.
The course will run all three of the loops at the New London Technical Trails: Orange, Blue, and Green. The race will begin with a short section on gravel and paved road before finishing on the trail.
The trails are well-used, feature minimal trip hazards, and are still relatively new as they were completed less than 3 years ago.
There will be two water stops with light aid along the course.
