Virtual Freedom 5k 2020

Welcome to The Freedom 5k 2020 Virtual Race! 

Hooah! The Freedom 5k is going virtual in 2020! We are so excited to host our patriotic racers this year in a new style. Your mission this Veteran’s Day Weekend: Chart your own 5k course to honor those who have served and to raise funds for the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA’s "Free Adoptions for Veterans" program and/or No Greater Sacrifice's mission to deliver higher education scholarships to the children of our fallen or severely wounded.

• Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA’s “Free Adoptions for Veterans” program: The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is proud to serve the veteran community through our Free Adoptions for Veterans program. Albemarle County is home to around 6,500 veterans, making up about 5% of the county’s total population (U.S. Census). The secluding nature of post-traumatic stress disorder prevents many veterans from seeking mainstream treatment, but research suggests that companion animals can help provide a non-stigmatizing alternative therapy. 
  
  
• No Greater Sacrifice: No Greater Sacrifice (NGS) is dedicated to the children of our nation’s fallen and wounded Service members delivering scholarships and resources to improve their quality of life through the pursuit of higher education. NGS has committed more than $12.5 million in post-high school education benefits nation-wide.

The race will take place the weekend of November 6th through November 11th, Veteran’s Day. Complete your mission any time between the 6th through the 11th to obtain your badge of honor finisher’s medal. Send a Salute

Upon completing your 5K run or walk, you are invited to “Send a Salute”, a shout out to your favorite Veteran(s), or to thank all Veterans.  As an example-- “I just ran 3 miles in honor of SSGT Doug Miller—thank you for your service!”  Further details coming soon on how to participate and send us your salute.  A special patriotic prize will be mailed to all that “send us a salute”!  USA! USA! USA!
