Description

Washington's Washout is stage two of a two-part "stage race" style challenge called the Redoubt Raid.  The intent of this adventure is for participants to set up a campsite at Newport News Park, drive to the Harwood's Mill parking lot and do Stage 1 (UnCivilThighzed) for up to 10 hours, get back to camp for the night and do stage 2 (Washington's Washout) the next day for up to 10 hours.  The complete course will take participants through many Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields and encampments. For full details of the Raid, visit the event page HERE. For more info about Stage 1 - UnCivilThighzed click HERE

Washington's Washout - Stage 2

This challenge begins in Newport News Park, home to tons of Revolutionary war history.  The paddle/trek orienteering section will take participants to many acres of unexplored woods sprinkled with checkpoints of unique trees and hidden redoubts. The bike section leaves NN park and enters the Yorktown Battlefield Colonial National Historical Park.  The first stop is General George Washingtons Camp where you can fill your water bottle from a natural spring he used to hydrate his headquarters.  From there you will pass through the French camps and eventually the main battlefields.  Navigate through historic Yorktown and stop by Yorktown Pub for a quick bite and drink before heading to the secret and challenging singletrack mountain bike trails of Wormley Pond. Participants will be pleasantly surprised by the course design, only possible because it was literally the Race Director's childhood stomping grounds.

This virtual adventure challenge is up to 10 hours of legit navigation, transitions and physical exertion specifically designed to give options for athletes new to AR as well as the most experienced racers.  Our course design has three types of virtual checkpoints.  Enduro points are designed for athletes who want an AR challenge without tough navigation. All Enduro points are on trails and no bush/bikewhacking required.  Adventure points are for the typical adventure racer who is comfortable going off trail for checkpoints but is still learning advanced navigational skills.  Pro points are designed to challenge the most experienced AR navigators that are comfortable with putting in the extra miles, plotting their own points, choosing which points to give up and using advanced ar tools such as pace counting, bike computers and UTM plotters.   Please visit https://www.thisabilityadventures.com/virtual-adventure-challenges  to learn all the details about this challenge, race rules, mandatory gear and scoring.

thisABILITY Adventures background information.

COVID 19 has all but wiped clean the Adventure Racing calendar for most AR enthusiasts so Team thisABILITY decided to launch an event company called thisABILITY Adventures to produce virtual AR challenges to give racers much-needed adventures to keep up the stoke and training needed to be ready for the next in-person Adventure Race.  We go out of our way to make our virtual challenges as close to a real adventure race as possible to be sure participants can have opportunities to hone in their endurance and skills in all domains to include trekking, mountain biking, paddling, transitioning and most importantly, navigation and route planning.
