FAQ

How do I participate?

Register for a challenge  You can run, walk, bike, skate, hand-cycle, dance - whatever gets you active on the trail!  The Hawthorne Fall Challenge is about keeping you motivated to have an active lifestyle and enjoy the Virginia Capital Trail. If you're on wheels, you're required to wear a helmet.  As you complete your miles, submit your results so you can reach your goal.

How do I submit my results?

Through your RunSignUp profile.  Follow these instructions on how to do so.

Where does the Challenge take place?

Pick your entry point on the Virginia Capital Trail. You can start on Dock Street or any place between Richmond and Yorktown. Robin Yoder's challenge has a planned starting point in Jamestown and will finish up in Richmond at Dock Street. For each challenge, you should attempt to reach your own personal goal on the Trail. The Fall Challenge is all about fresh air, sunshine, and healthy living.

What is the Virginia Capital Trail?

The Virginia Capital Trail is a 51.7 mile multi-use trail running from Jamestown to Richmond along the scenic Route 5 corridor.  Get more info here.

I completed the Hawthorne Fall Challenge and want to keep going!  What do I do?

That's awesome!  You have a couple of options.

1) Continue to log your miles as you have been.  You can continue to track your progress with us.

2) Sign up for another Challenge!

You may want to consider Robin Yoder's Challenge. The goal is to complete the full 51.7 miles. Whoa!!!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

Step one is to pick a goal for your Fall Challenge.  Then you will need to start your journey on the entire Virginia Capital Trail to reach your goal.  Run, walk, bike, skate, scoot, unicycle, dance, etc. - whatever mode you choose.  Log your results to move towards completing the Challenge.

How can you complete the entire Trail?  You've got options!

If your goal is 51.7, you'll need to cover each mile of the trail.  Think in terms of passing every mile marker.  This means you'll want a drop-off and pick-up system. Sign up with a friend and shuttle vehicles (one at each end of the section you intend to complete) or ask somebody to pick you up when you're finished.  You can also utilize Amtrak.

Note: You could go 26 miles out and 26 miles back, thereby doing 52 miles on the Trail but still not have completed ALL of the miles of the Trail.
