Don’t miss this breathtaking course!

Watch nature wake from its winter slumber and take in the early signs of spring in Virginia as you run over and along the James River, through well-established neighborhoods and outdoor gems like Pony Pasture, and start and finish on the gorgeous campus of the University of Richmond. You’ll not only accomplish a personal goal but will also support Sports Backers nonprofit goal of building a vibrant community. Join us!

Half Course

Participants in the Virginia Credit Union River City Half will set out on course on the Westhampton Green along Keller Rd on the University of Richmond. Participants will pass through the beautiful campus, run over the Huguenot Bridge and alongside the James River, passing through outdoor gems like Riverside Meadows and Pony Pasture before making their way to Forest Hill Avenue. From there, runners will be challenged to make a steep climb in the Westover Hills neighborhood, but the views of the iconic “Million Dollar View” bridge promise to be worth the effort! Participants will then head left on the Nickel bridge to cross the James River once more before running past the historic Carillon, through the well-established neighborhoods of Windsor Farms and along River Road, before finishing back on the Top Ranked “Most Beautiful Campus” of the University of Richmond.

  • Course Limit: 3.5 Hours
  • Course Cut Off 1: Mile 6.5 Water Stop @ 9:50 AM
  • Course Cut Off 2: Mile 10 Water STop @ 10:45 AM

5k Course

The beautiful 5k course will begin on the Westhampton Green along Keller Rd on the University of Richmond and will lead participants through campus and along River Road before running out and back on the Huguenot Bridge. After soaking in spectacular river views, participants will return toward campus along the Gambles Mill Corridor and finish near Westhampton Lake. 

  • Course Limit: 1.5 Hours
  • Course Cut Off 1: Mile 1 @ 8:50 AM

Richmond Road Runners Club Winter Training Team

Need help training? We partner with the Richmond Road Runner’s Club on their Winter Half Marathon Training Team as the official training solution for the half. 

Registration is currently closed and will reopen for the 2026 event.

Sports Backers, the event organizer, is excited to use the Virginia Credit Union River City Half & River City 5k to also promote and fundraise for Richmond area nonprofits who work in tandem to help all members of our community achieve the goal of living actively. Sports Backers

Our mission is to inspire you to live an active lifestyle. Your support allows us to: advocate for safe and accessible bike and pedestrian infrastructure, offer free fitness classes, support running and fitness clubs at area schools, and develop fun, new participatory events for our entire community.

CARITAS

CARITAS creates a safe place to heal and time to rebuild. For people experiencing homelessness and/or addiction, CARITAS is Richmond’s active community of caring that provides them a safe space for healing and recovery–and the support to rebuild and renew lives.

Friendship Circle

Friendship Circle of Virginia (FCVA) aims to create an inclusive community by facilitating friendships and social opportunities for people with and without disabilities to connect through meaningful social experiences at home and throughout the community.  We celebrate the differences and similarities of every person, valuing each of us as an integral part of the community.

Greater Richmond Fit4Kids

Fit4Kids is dedicated to improving children’s health and wellness through physical activity and healthy eating programming.  We believe that active, well-nourished kids perform better in school, have greater self-esteem, and grow to lead productive lives.

Greater Richmond SCAN

SCAN is the only local nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect in the Greater Richmond area. SCAN provides awareness, support, advocacy, treatment, and education to protect children, promote positive parenting, strengthen families, and create a community that values and cares for its children. SCAN’s five programs include: the Family Support Program, Child Advocacy Center, Richmond Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Circle Preschool Program and Community Programs.

Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond

At Girls on the Run of Greater Richmond, we envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. Using running and other physical activities as a platform for building self-esteem and teaching life skills, Girls on the Run programs are a safe space for girls to come together, push their limitations, and run headlong into confidence, empowerment, and community.

MedRVA Foundation

At the MedRVA Foundation, we imagine a world where everyone can see the wonder of their surroundings and experience the beauty of life. From our roots as the Richmond Eye & Ear Hospital, we have given hope to Central Virginians with vision impairment for more than 70 years. We can’t do it without you.

Shood

Shood believes everyone deserves the basic dignity of having a clean pair of shoes that fit. They make gently used, high-quality shoes available to those in need through a personal, pop-up shopping experience, throughout Richmond, Virginia.

 

SOAR365

SOAR365 is a Richmond-based not-for-profit organization created in 1954 by area families who were determined to find a better way of caring for their loved ones with disabilities.  We employ more than 250 individuals, including approximately 130 who have a disability. Our wide range of programs and services are designed for individuals and families who are coping with the daily “real world” challenges of living with a disability.  We have a profound impact on nearly 1,150 individuals and families who receive our help each year. Sportable

Sportable has created opportunities and transformed the lives of individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments through sport since 2005.

Central Virginia’s premier adaptive sports club, Sportable provides sporting opportunities to more than 400 athletes each year by offering a variety of competitive and recreational adaptive sports programs. Our athletes are all ages, come from different backgrounds, and have varying abilities. By fostering a fun, inclusive, competitive, and accessible environment, we transform the lives of our athletes and free them to see beyond their disability, enhance their peer relationships and help them to reach their personal finish line.

SwimRVA

SwimRVA is the non-profit community hub for aquatics in the Richmond region.  SwimRVA is building social bridges through aquatics that cross physical, racial, and economic barriers.  We serve as a catalyst for water safety, health and fitness, sports tourism, competitive aquatics, and possibility, for all Richmonders.  Making aquatics ACCESSIBLE is central to why we’re here.  Our Drownproof Richmond initiative has always been at the heart of our nonprofit mission to bring aquatic access and education to everyone in the region.

UMFS

UMFS is a non-profit dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and families. We envision a future where every child in Virginia has the support and resources to grow into resilient adults. Through foster care, adoption, specialized education, residential treatment, and a comprehensive array of community-based services, we provide safe environments, and the tools needed to help children and families reach their full potential.

Virginia Capital Trail Foundation

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation exists to protect, promote, and enhance the 51.7 mile Virginia Capital Trail, and to serve as a resource, community builder, and connector to other trails throughout the Commonwealth. Your support helps provide advocacy for an interconnected and expanded trail network across Virginia, promote healthy active living, connect people to the Capital Trail by providing free educational and environmental programs, and ensure the Capital Trail is protected and maintained for future generations.

 

Cancellation Policy

Entry fees are non-refundable, even in the case of a race cancellation, postponement, event format changes, and/or if you are unable to participate. Race numbers and entries cannot be transferred to another person. No exceptions. This means once we have received your entry, you will not receive a refund if you cannot participate and you may not give or sell your number or timing chip to anyone else. Anyone found participating with another person’s number will be disqualified and both people will be barred from future Sports Backers events.

Deferrals

You may defer your registration from the 2025 Virginia Credit Union River City Half & 5k to the 2026 event until February 21. Deferred registrations may not be transferred to another person. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances. Deferrals may only be claimed for the 2026 event, you may only defer once, deferral fees depend on distance. No exceptions.

Through February 21: $20 fee for Half / $10 fee for 5k

Rules

  • This race is conducted under the rules of USATF and the Road Runners Club of America.
  • In consideration of the safety of all participants, IN-LINE SKATES, SKATEBOARDS, BICYCLES, HANDCYCLES, OR ANIMALS ON LEASHES will not be allowed on the course.
  • Strollers, Baby Joggers, Baby Carriers are not allowed on the course.
  • The Half Marathon has a minimum age of 12; The 5k has a minimum age of 6 on or before race day.
