Due to social distancing guidelines and our concern for the safety of our community, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia and Four on the 4th have decided to change this year’s event to a virtual race. The safety of our runners, walkers, volunteers and staff is our number one priority, and although we are very disappointed to not be able to run, walk and celebrate together on the 4th of July, we want everyone to be safe and complete their 4 miles how they feel comfortable.
Four on the 4th has become a 4th of July tradition among friends and family in the Roanoke Valley to kick off the holidays’ festivities. We invite you to help us break our record of participants (510 4-milers, and 99 kid fun runners!), and register for the virtual Four on the 4th.
Do we get swag?
YES! The 4-miler is capped at 575 participants. Every virtual 4-miler participant gets a finishers medal, and we think you’re really going to like them this year. You’ll also get a commemorative and festive t-shirt. We will send out a virtual race bib that you can print, and we’ll provide everyone with a virtual Facebook Profile Picture frame. Due to costs, we will not be able to provide a medal for the Free Kids Fun Run, but we will provide those that register for the fun run a print-at-home race bib to decorate. If your kid would like a commemorative race shirt, you can purchase one for just $10.
How do I get my swag?
Medals and t-shirts will be available for pick-up at Fleet Feet Roanoke about a week after July 4th. We will email everyone when they are ready for pickup. If you live out of state, we can mail your medal and t-shirt to you.
What are the race day details?
You can complete your Four on the 4th virtual race ANY TIME between July 1 at 12am and July 5 at 11:59pm. You can complete the 4-miles ANY WHERE you feel safe. You are NOT required to complete the race on the Four on the 4th route. Wherever you run or walk - please stay safe and follow social distancing guidelines.
How do I submit my race results?
Instructions will be sent out to all registered participants on how to submit race results prior to July 1. It is NOT required to submit your race results, but some of the awards do require submitted results to be qualified to win. Results must be submitted any time between July 1 at 12am and July 5 at 11:59pm.
Can we still win?
YES! Although we won’t have our typical top 3 male and female overall and age group categories this year, we have come up with new virtual prizes and awards. Scroll down for details.
Where is my money going?
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia have been severely impacted due to COVID-19. Not only have they had to temporarily shut down their after school programs, but their fundraising efforts have drastically decreased. One of their main fundraisers for the year that takes place in May was postponed. Now, Four on the 4th is going virtual. Without these major fundraisers, the Boys & Girls Club cannot provide scholarships for their summer camps and after school programs, which many youth rely on.
The cost for the Boys & Girls Club Summer Camp is $65/week per child, which still does not cover the full cost of all that the program provides. Since the May Fundraiser was postponed, the actual cost per child for the 8-week Summer Camp is $1,040. The Club needs to fundraise that amount per child to enable youth to attend.
The Boys & Girls Club expects to have a limited number of students in each classroom this summer due to the COVID-10 restrictions in place to be compliant with the Governor’s orders. That means the cost for Summer Camp will be more condensed, but every dollar counts and will go directly to providing scholarships.
About Boys & Girls Clubs of SWVA Take Out Hunger Campaign:
During this pandemic, the Boys & Girls Club has gone above and beyond to help their club members and community. The Boys & Girls Club has partnered with United Way and the Community Foundation Serving Western VA to raise $100,000 to feed families in Roanoke, Shawsville and Rocky Mount. All money raised over the 7-week campaign will be used to purchase food from 20+ local restaurants to serve 1,000-2,000 meals per week.
The first 2 weeks the Boys & Girls Club began feeding families, they served over 800 meals in 2 locations, with half of the families being Club families, and the other half from the local community. The 3rd week they served 1,055 meals in Roanoke and Shawsville, and they are expanding to Rocky Mount this week. You can donate to the Take Out Hunger Campaign here.
