Description
As humans, we are very complicated and intricate beings. We are driven for many reasons, causes, situations, people, emotions, and events. For some it’s sports, whether it’s football, basketball, soccer or even tennis. Passion drives us at the highest level. There is something in a human that drives them with a passion that transcends in many cases – rational thought. A human will remember specific events that are so etched in their minds that every detail can experienced again and again. The passion and the memory of the event can be good or it can be bad. We don’t have a choice on which of these events will be remembered. They are just there.
September 11, 2001 is cemented in all our minds as one of those horrific memories. For those of us who lived that day, it is always a fresh reminder. The years have passed and many who now enter the ranks of TSA were in grade school on that fateful day. The memorials have been built and the events are held each year to commemorate those who were lost. Those that lived that day and work for TSA, came with a passion that drives them each day to honor and protect.
Passion and respect have created the 9-11 Remembrance 5K at Washington Dulles International Airport. The first run took place on the airport property in 2010 with a turn-out of two dedicated members of TSA IAD. No sooner than the first run had ended the planning began for the next year. In year four the commemorative pins were added for the participants. Each year a different pin was designed and the number of participants grew. The same year the airport authority allowed TSA to set the course near Gate 317 and the active air plane areas. The number of runners had grown to 19 and the event was expanded. In the 5th year the National Capital Region airports were invited and the Dulles Morale Group was assisting with advertising and refreshments. Event T-shirts were created and offered in year seven with participants from BWI, DCA, Airline Stakeholders and MWAA employees.
Due to social distancing and the current pandemic this years 9-11 Remembrance 5K will be a virtual run to protect all parties involved.
We’re proud to continue this tradition and look forward to many future 9-11 Remembrance 5Ks whether they are in person or virtually.
