Description
After Hurricane Harvey devastated most of Texas, Hurricane Irma made landfall in Florida on September 10 as a Category 3 storm after leaving a trail of destruction through the Caribbean, including significant devastation throughout the Leeward, U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Haiti. Deaths have been attributed to the storm all along its path and many islands remain without power and with little shelter.
The running community has been known to rise up and help those in need, so we have created an event that will allow people to do something tangible from wherever they are in the world. Our Virtual 5k/10k provides an easy way to donate to those devastated by Hurricane Irma, and gives us all a great reason gather together and lace up our shoes.
Simply register and then run, bike, swim, or walk the 5k or 10k distance ANYwhere in the world at ANYtime through September 24th.
Be sure to post a "race photo" on social media with the hashtag #IrmaReliefRun. We look forward to seeing all of our participants!
In order to maximize the charitable impact of this race, we are limiting the swag to an optional lapel pin that is available as a separate purchase with your race registration/donation. 100% of the proceeds of this run (all registration payments as well as any additional donations added during registration) will go directly to Irma relief efforts.
The story behind our charity choices:
Having donated heavily to the American Red Cross and a Texas-based charity in our #RunForTexas campaign, The #IrmaReliefRun campaign will benefit two entirely different charities: The Center for Disaster Philanthropy (CDP) Hurricane Irma Recover Fund and The Humane Society of the U.S. Disaster Relief Fund. This way we are not only helping our brothers and sisters in need, but our furry friends too!
Right now, attention is rightly focused on providing immediate relief to survivors – temporary shelter, food, water, and other basic needs The CDP is uniquely focused on highlighting the long view of disaster recovery. It allows donors to give now to support recovery needs that continue long after the TV cameras and news teams rollup coverage and turn the eye of the world away from this disaster. We expect the long-term needs to be rebuilding homes, businesses, infrastructure, meeting the needs of young children, and supporting mental health needs. For more information on how the CDP will use our donation, see this link: http://disasterphilanthropy.org/cdp-fund/cdp-hurricane-irma-recovery-fund/
The Humane Society has a disaster relief fund that enables the rescue and relief efforts for past, present and future natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires and oil spills. Currently they are working hard to rescue and provide temporary shelter to animals in need and help lost and displaced animals reunite with their homes and families. For more information on how the Human Society will use our donation, see this link: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/animal_rescue/disaster_relief_fund.html
