Route Set-up

Water Station 1 Medium Priority

You must be 5 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Two adults plus family members and friends are encouraged to cheer on the athletes, have available paper cups (provided) filled with water, assist in picking-up any trash around the garbage containers.

Trash cans and paper cups will be provided. We are requesting volunteers bring a table and 1 cooler (to 2 coolers, depending on registrants) of water.

The races will run from 9:00-noon. Water stations should be in place no later than 8:45 with take-down at 12:00 (stragglers). This is a rain or shine event.

Main duties would be:
-to ensure availability of water for runners
-be a cheerleader
-be a point of reference "Where's the loo?" "It's a half mile up."
-to stay with/communicate if a runner goes down.

There will be an info session the evening before (May 3rd at 5:00 p.m. at the WGWL Welcome Center) with a meal provided for all volunteers. You will be shown your location at that time and can ask any questions.

Registration

Runner Registration High Priority

You must be 16 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Individual will look up runners alphabetically, provide USATF waiver form for signature, obtain signed waiver and file alphabetically, then direct runners to pick-up race packet.

Volunteer must be friendly and personable.

Volunteer must be knowledgeable about runner logistics (where the packets are, what's in the packets, where the shuttle picks up and when, when the racer info meeting is, what refreshments are provided for runners and where, etc).

Volunteer must be detailed - each runner must have a signed USATF waiver form on file to be in compliance with USATF sanctioning.

This is a seated position, likely outdoors. This is a rain or shine event.

There will be an info session the evening before (May 3rd at 5:30 p.m.) with a meal provided for all volunteers. You will be shown your location at that time and can ask any questions.

Runner Packets High Priority

You must be 14 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Individual will provide runners with their race packet. Each race (half, 10K and 5 K) will have unique packets.

Volunteer must be friendly and personable.

Volunteer must be knowledgable about runner logistics (where the packets are, what's in the packets, where the shuttle picks up and when, when the racer info meeting is, what refreshments are provided for runners and where, etc).

Volunteer must be detailed - each runner must receive their designated packet to ensure proper bib number and chip timer.

This is seated and mobile position, likely outdoors. This is a rain or shine event.

There will be an info session the evening before (May 3rd at 5:30 p.m.) with a meal provided for all volunteers. You will be shown your location at that time and can ask any questions.

Race Monitors

Race Monitor - Turn Point (McIntire) High Priority

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Turn-point Race Monitor will work in a team (2) to ensure half-marathon racers cross the turning point. Turn-point Race Monitors will also validate the passing of full marathon racers from Minnesota through McIntire on their way to Riceville.

Race numbers will need to be read off and recorded of all half-marathon runners and full marathon runners.

Those numbers must then be delivered to the WGWL Trailhead and given to the timing company for verification with the top finishers.

This is a rain or shine event.

Race Monitor - Rear Full High Priority

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

A responsible adult willing to bike behind all half marathon racers.

Volunteer must be willing to assist racers who go down between aid stations. They must have capability and presence-of-mind to call for help and remain with the runner until assistance arrives.

Volunteer must be able to bike 27 miles at a brisk pace.

Volunteer must provide their own bike, helmet, cell phone and first aid kit. This is a rain or shine event.

There will be an info session the evening before (May 3rd at 5:00 p.m.) with a meal provided for all volunteers. You will be shown your location at that time and can ask any questions.

Race Monitor Route Guide Medium Priority

You must be 16 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Individual directs runners at route locations where race route may be unclear.

Volunteer must be capable of standing for 1-2 hours in full sun or rain.

Volunteer will vocally and with gestures direct runners to the correct race route. This is a rain or shine event.

Timing

Back-up Timer High Priority

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Individual must own and know how to operate a stop watch.

Volunteer must work closely with the hired timing company to start stop watch in tandem with chip timer.

Volunteer must have vocal capacity to call out times of runners as they finish if chip timer fails.

Volunteer must be physically mobile and capable of standing for 2-2.5 hours. This is a rain or shine event.

There will be an info session the evening before (May 3rd at 5:00 p.m.) with a meal provided for all volunteers. You will be shown your location at that time and can ask any questions.

Emergency Services High Priority

You must be 18 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

EMT/Paramedics will provide racer, bystander and volunteers medical assistance as needed. Ambulance/rescue vehicle will be located at the WGWL Trailhead.

Must be able to provide assistance in all forms of weather.

Refreshment/Hospitality Assistant Medium Priority

You must be 14 or older to volunteer for this task.

Details

Is a welcoming presence to racers and volunteers. Serves as a problem-solver, greeter, and point-of-information prior to race start (8:15-9:30).

Backfills racer refreshments (bananas, donut holes, water) from 9:30-12:30 a.m.).
Consider holding some back to ensure half-marathoners may partake.

Assists with the preparation of and vending of walking tacos to racers and the public (10:30 on).

Ensures clean-up. This is a rain or shine event.
