Road Route Sign Placement

Details

You will be given spray paint and stencils that say Shi-Tri with an arrow. You will go along the bike and run route (feel free to use your bike for both to do the markings) and make markings along the route to tell participants where they should be going.
You will be provided with a map of both courses with indicated points where the routes should be marked. You will mark the run route in only one direction, from Downtown Owosso to McCurdy park on the river trail. Marks should be about 200 yds apart, with extra marks made at locations where they are to make turns, cross bridges, etc.

You will mark the bike route as an out and back, marking both sides of the road in the correct way of traffic (bikes ride WITH traffic). Marks for the bike should be approximately every 400yds (1/4 mile).

McCurdy Park Set-Up

Details

You will be setting up the McCurdy Park kayak transition area.
Set Up Tasks:
• Place “Paddle” flag sign in grassy area near bridge end (as indicated on map)
• Place flag stakes to indicate the two laugh areas on the river (as indicated on map)
• Place stakes with bib number ranges along the north side of the driveway. Each sign will indicate what bib number kayaks should be placed in that row.
• Set up check in tables in grassy area on the south side of the driveway.
• Tape the Check In signs to the tables. There will be 3 different signs with letter ranges. This will indicate where people should go to check in based on last name.
• Place the “Shi-Tri Check In ENTER” sign with arrow at the Norton Street Entrance
• Place the “Shi-Tri Check In EXIT” sign with arrow at the Governor Parsons Drive corner.

Bike Staging Set-Up

Details

You will be setting up theJCPenny Parking Lot bike transition area.

Set Up Tasks:
• Set up bike racks in 4 rows within the bike fencing that should already be assembled
• There should be 3 rows of 10 racks and 1 row of 8 racks. There should be 15 ft between the rows of racks and 15 feet between the racks and the fences.
• Label each row with a range sign on the front, 1-40, 41-80, 81-120, 121-150
• Label each rack with a 4 bike range sign (1-4, etc). Each rack will hold 4 bikes, place each of these signs on the middle of each rack with the sign facing the south, as all the bikes should be placed on the south side of the racks.
• Place the ENTER sign on the outside of the fence at the southern opening to the fenced area.
• Place the EXIT sign on the inside of the fence at the Northern opening to the fenced area.

Post-Race Refreshments

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Report to the Fitness Coliseum entrance to grab the post race refreshment items.
Set up the snacks and water on the tables that are set up outside of the finish chute fencing. Make sure that items are easy to grab for participants. Keep the table stocked with the snacks and water bottles, replenishing from the stock of items inside as needed. Throw away all trash in proper receptacles. At the conclusion of the race you will take any unused snacks/drinks back inside Fitness Coliseum. You will fold up the tables and take inside Fitness Coliseum.

Pre-Race Bike Staging Area Gatekeeper

Details

You will be located at the entrance and exit of the bike staging area.
AT THE ENTRANCE
• As participants bring their bikes to the staging area you will first ask to see their bib
number. This will #1, make sure they have checked in properly at McCurdy park and
dropped of their kayak. You will then direct them through the entrance of the bike staging area and tell them where to put their bike. The rows and individual rack will be labeled with numbers.
• Instruct them to place their bike on the south side of the rack using their seat to hang it on the rack or a kickstand if they have one.
• Instruct them to leave anything they will want for the bike portion of the race(snacks, shoes, towel, etc)
• Remind them to leave their helmet.
• Instruct them to EXIT, for right now, back through the entrance they walked through (there will be a timing mat at the exit and we don’t want to accidentally mess up anyones timing reading)

AT THE EXIT
• You will be keeping non participants form entering the bike area. You will also be assist participants inside the area to place their bikes on the south side of the correct rack.
You will also be showing/instructions participants that during the race they will have to exit through your gate, walking their bike, they they can mount it and must then ride over the timing mat in the driveway to begin their time.

Participant Check-In Table

WHAT you’ll be doing:
You will be located at the Check-In tables set up on the north side of the driveway in the back of the park by the kayak staging area.
• When a participant arrives you will check their ID, give them their race packet and mark them off the list in front of you.
• Point them towards the correct area of the kayak staging area to leave their kayak (there will be posts in the ground with number ranges on them. They will put their kayak in the row that corresponds with their bib number.
• Instruct them to leave their paddles and life vests.
• Instruct them to put one of their bib number labels on both their kayak and their paddle.
• If they need assistance moving their kayak, have one of the kayak unloaders assist them.
• Remind them that they will need to drop their bike off in downtown Owosso behind the JCPenny prior to 8:45 and they will need their bib number to get into the bike staging area!

McCurdy Park Refreshment Area

WHAT you’ll be doing:
• Snacks and refreshment items will be sitting next to the check in tables. When You arrive check ins will be complete and these will turn into the refreshment tables.
• Clean up the tables as needed, remove check in signs, etc
• Utilize what WERE the check in tables, and set up refreshments for the volunteers and participants.
• Ensure the tables are organized and the snacks and drinks are easily accessible for the participants and volunteers.
• When the last runner has gotten in their kayak, you may begin to clean up the refreshment area
• Throw away any trash and box up any leftover refreshments and leave on the tables.

Kayak Unloaders

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will help participants unload kayaks from their vehicles and place them in the kayak staging area correctly.
You will be located in the back of McCurdy park near the check in tables. As participants come and check in you will assist them as needed, to place their kayaks, life vests and paddles in the correct spot for them in the Kayak Staging area. There will be rows with numbered signs. Check the participants bib number and place their kayak in the correct row. You should also remind them to leave their paddles and
life vests and to label all of their items with tags from their bib sheet.

Bridge Spotters

Details

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will check in at Fitness Coliseum then head to the Blue Bridge at the end of Oakwood Ave.
They will guide runners to cross the bridge from the south side of the river and have them continue to run along the north side of the river.
Volunteers will stay at the bridge and notify the Bike area Lead via text message when groups of kayakers are heading their way. This will be most important for the first group of kayakers and if they see any large clumps of kayakers coming through at once.

Corner Spotters

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will check in at Fitness Coliseum to meet their coordinator and get their assignment, then head to their assigned corners on the bike route.
Corner spotters will park along side and off the road and stand at the corners of the cross streets of the bike routes to alert vehicles that a race is happening and to keep bikers safe as they cross intersections.
Your job is to make motorists aware of the bicyclists and the race and to keep your corner safe. The “lantern” participant, the official last participant, will let you know who they are when they pass you and you will be relieved of duty at that time.

During Race Bike Staging Area Gatekeeper

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will be located at the entrance and exit of the bike staging area to direct participants in which to enter and exit and to ensure that participants WALK their bikes out of the staging area and to ensure only participants enter the bike staging area.

AT THE ENTRANCE
• You will wave down participants as they exit the water and have them enter the bike
staging area through your gate.
• As they enter you will instruct them to grab their bike & helmet and WALK their bike out of the staging area until they are through the exit gate
• You will not allow anyone besides participants in the bike staging area

AT THE EXIT
• You will wave down participants as they grab their bikes and have them walk their bike through your gate and then ensure they ride it through the timing mat to begin the bike leg.
• Do not let anyone enter through your gate, exit only

Kayak Puller-Outer

Details

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will be in waders and will assist participants exiting the river by holding their kayaks so participants can get out and helping to haul kayaks from the river onto shore. Waders will be provided to you. A member of our staff will be reaching out via email to get your wader size within the next week.
Volunteers will set up in teams of 2 along the rivers edge and wave the paddlers in to them as they finish up the river paddle. You will assist in holding the kayaks still and stable as the participants exit their vessels and help pull them out of the river.
Once the participant and their vessel are out of the river the kayak movers will move the kayak to the pick up area and you can instruct the participant to the bike staging entrance to start the last leg of their race.

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will be on the grassy area by where they kayaks will be pulling out. As other volunteers assist the participants out of the water, you will grab the kayaks once they are on shore and line them up in the grassy area to the east where when can be picked up after the race. Ensure that you pull the first ones as far away as you can so that you have enough room for them all. Check out the site map that your area lead will have to help you!

Kayak Launch Helpers

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Either option A or B
A: Volunteers will be set up at the kayak staging area. You will assist race participants in carrying their kayak to the river by grabbing one end of the kayak and helping them carry it to the launch.
B: Volunteers will be set up at the new kayak launch to assist participants in launching into the river.
• Participants will come to your launches with their paddle vessels and you will assist as needed in helping them launch safely (some may not want your assistance).
• This will include holding their paddle vessel steady for them, possibly handing them their paddle, etc.
• You will also be checking to make sure that each participant has their life vest with them prior to beginning this portion of the race.

Volunteer photographers will report to the Fitness Coliseum building at 8:30am to get their area assignments.

Jerome St Guards & Bike Dismount Authority

Details

This position will be in charge of keeping cars at bay on Jerome Street and giving participants the all clear to run from the river to the bike area. They will also be in charge of notifying the participants at the location they are required to dismount their bike and run to the finish!

There will be one volunteer posted on either side of the participant crossing area on Jerome St. to keep cars at bay and allow participants to cross. See your area lead for the exact location of the bike dismount area (on the corner of Jerome and the river trail sidewalk)

Kayak Pick-Up Gatekeepers

Details

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will be on the grassy area by where they kayaks have been laid after they have pulled out from the river. You will be in charge of keeping the kayaks secure during this time and making sure the right person pick up the right kayak.
When a participant(or their spectator that has their bib number) comes to pick up their kayak, check they bib number and the bib number on the kayak and paddles before you allow them to take the kayak. Many kayaks will look alike so this is important!

Bike Tear Down Crew

Details

WHAT you’ll be doing:
Volunteers will tear down the bike staging area after ALL PARTICIPANTS have left on they’re bikes. The designated “lantern” participant will let the bike gatekeepers know they are the last ones when they come through.
Participants will take their bikes straight to their vehicles after the race, not back to the bike staging area. Volunteers will remove the signs and the bike racks. If there are any participant items in the bike staging area, leave them there so they can be picked up by the participants before they leave.
The racks will be loaded onto the trailer next to the fenced area.
Throw away all trash.
Take the RIDE and other non-throw away signage to Fitness Coliseum
Fencing can stay where it is at and will be picked up by Great Lakes Fusion.
