Volunteer Role Outline
Position: Course Monitor (Direction & Road Crossing Safety)
Role Purpose
Course Monitors help ensure runners stay on the correct route and cross roads safely. You are a friendly, visible presence who provides clear directions, promotes safety, and supports a smooth race experience.
Key Responsibilities
1. Course Direction
Stand at your assigned location for the duration of your shift.
Clearly indicate the correct direction for runners using:
Hand signals
Verbal cues (e.g., “Straight ahead!” or “Turn left at the cones!”)
Watch for runners who appear unsure and proactively guide them.
Do not leave your post unless instructed by the volunteer coordinator.
2. Road Crossing Safety
Alert runners when approaching a road crossing.
Use loud, clear instructions such as:
“Slow down—cross traffic ahead!”
“Look both ways before crossing!”
Coordinate with traffic control (police or certified flaggers) if present.
Never step into traffic or attempt to stop vehicles unless officially authorized.
3. Runner Support
Encourage runners with positive, calm energy.
Answer basic course-related questions when possible.
Stay alert for runners who appear injured or in distress and report concerns immediately.
Safety Guidelines
Wear your volunteer vest/shirt and any provided ID at all times.
Stay aware of your surroundings, including runners, vehicles, and spectators.
Do not use headphones or mobile phones while monitoring the course.
In case of an emergency, contact the volunteer coordinator or race officials using the provided instructions.

Comfortable clothing suitable for the weather
Closed-toe shoes
Sunscreen, hat, or rain gear as needed
Water (if not provided)
