Details
We require a large fleet of boats to help mark and patrol the Swim course. Substantial craft such as sailboats and cruisers are positioned at each mile as a mark that swimmers must pass. Smaller and quicker craft are used to patrol well away from the course, warning oncoming boats and assisting the Coast Guard in controlling the course. Safety boats are expected to carry safety gear and provisions and be able to provide emergency services as needed. Each boat requires a captain and one or two crew members, and be equipped with a marine radio. Certain boats will be asked to carry a ham operator, who provides added communications skills. All boats are expected to be in position at least one-half hour before the start of the Swim and may be needed for the entire 4-hour length of The Swim.
