These two people (you know who you are) run the trails all day. They give pep talks, dispense advice garnered from 1000’s of miles on the trails, fix markings, call in support for injured athletes, and keep things running smooth (pun intended).

Course Marker // Friday

Details

Markers will hike the trail on Friday afternoon (potentially 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) in groups of 2-4 people. Staff will provide supplies such as stakes, mallets, rolls of ribbon, and signs. These will be tied on branches or pounded in the ground to give runners direction on the trail. We’ll meet at the A.B. Williams memorial parking lot (aka Forest picnic shelter) to partner up, hand out supplies, and divide the course. Plan on marking the course for about four hours and hiking approximately 5 miles.
PLEASE NOTE: This task is on Halloween morning/early afternoon.

Packet Pick Up // Friday 3:30 - 6 p.m.

Details

Volunteers will assist with packet pick up at 2nd Sole in Lakewood (18636 Detroit Ave, Lakewood, OH 44107). This role will set up the packet pick up area from 3:30 -4 p.m. inside the store. Packet pick up will be from 4 - 6 p.m. and tear down will immediately follow.
PLEASE NOTE: This task is on Halloween night.

Course Tester // Friday after 6 p.m.

Details

Similar to the course sweeper – The volunteer (s) runs or hikes the course from start to finish. They’ll need to carry their own water and a few supplies to add/adjust markings. Course testers are encouraged to think like someone who has never run the course before and consider if the markings provide enough directives, confidence, and can be spotted in the dark.
PLEASE NOTE: This task is on Halloween night.

Aid Station Captain/Co-Captain High Priority

Details

This is a critical role in our Conquer Crew—ask any athlete. Main duties: set up/tear down your aid station, create a clearly marked path in/out of the aid station free from obstacles like spectators, assign tasks to volunteers, & provide support to volunteers. Staff will coordinate volunteer schedules & you’re encouraged to recruit friends! You can declare a time either 4 a.m. - 1 p.m. or noon - 9 p.m. ET. Conquer staff will assist throughout the day.

Runner Check-in // 4 – 10 a.m. High Priority

Details

This shift is longer than the others to accommodate the rolling start for the various distances. It involves handing out race bibs & pre-ordered merchandise, helping check-in volunteers, and/or assisting runners with drop bags. This shift is busy, but fun, as you get to meet all the athletes beforehand!

Castle Climb Knight Medium Priority

Details

Participants will complete the 'Castle Climb' for a coin that they can redeem for extra swag at the finish. This volunteer role knights (with plastic swords) participants at the top of the Castle Climb and will ensure that they receive their coin to redeem at the finish. Costumes are strongly encouraged, but not required. Bring a chair to sit in while waiting for participants

Aid Station

Details

This involves heading out on the course to a designated location & assisting runners as they come through. Some of the tasks: fill water bottles & hydration bladders, restocking the food table, & helping runners find their drop bags. These shifts can be busy so we encourage folks who thrive on fast paced environments as well as enthusiastic volunteers who can bring up the spirits of our runners to sign up for a shift! The shift time varies and you can sign up for more than one shift.

Course Ambassador

Details

Ambassadors are part safety officer, part traffic cop, & part cheerleader. The first priority is runners’ safety – make sure they’re staying on the course, safe, & uninjured. These shifts are out on the course, either at a trail junction, sharp turn, or near a road. They look out for the safety of our athletes and make sure they go the right way. Volunteers help with giving directions & talking with crew to help them find their athlete. They may be asked to direct parking traffic or assist at the finish line.

Course Sweepers // Sunday

Details

The sweep hike/runs the course (5-10 miles) collecting the course markings. Sunday Sweepers need to carry signs, stakes, & ribbon. They must be strong enough to hike/run with a full load of supplies. These can be left at road crossings or picnic areas that are accessible by vehicles.
