Course Marshals are vitally important for a safe and successful race! They are stationed along the entire length of the course to keep runners safe and on course. They direct runner traffic and cheer runners enthusiastically. Some of these shifts are a tad long and it is highly recommended you wear comfortable shoes, clothes, water/snack, and even a chair depending on location assigned. You cannot leave your assigned station until the sweep vehicle or zone captain releases you. We will have some relief folks that come around on bicycles that will give you a break for a few minutes while you go to the nearest aid station for a snack and/or nature break.

Double Marathon 'Graveyard' Shift

We need die-hard, do anything Volunteers! This person will work overnight and make sure the 100 'NUTTY' folks doing the double marathon make it to each check point. Volunteer will sit in their vehicle and check these runners off. FOR THOSE OF YOU WORKING WITH A VOLUNTEER INCENTIVE CHARITY, THIS JOB COUNTS TWICE!

Course Marshals are vitally important for a safe and successful race! THESE COURSE MARSHAL POSITIONS ARE ON THE BRP. YOU MUST BE ON THE BRP AT YOUR LOCATION BY 7:00 AM DUE TO NO TRAFFIC ON BRP AFTER 7. EVEN IF YOUR POSITION DOESN'T BEGIN UNTIL AFTER 7, YOU MUST STILL BE ON SITE! Your job will be to direct runners in the correct direction while cheering them on. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a chair (and perhaps a book to read while you wait), and a bottle of water. You cannot leave your assigned station until the sweep vehicle or zone captain releases you.

Relay Team Liaison Medium Priority

Details

These all-star volunteers will be responsible for accounting for all relay team members. They will make sure all the team members are on the appropriate buses, they will accompany the buses to the different relay transition points, and account for all relay team members that have finished their relay leg. location depends on your time slot. the earliest slot is at the Spur aid station (where the big bike statues are), the second is at River's Edge South, and the third is at VTC on Jefferson Street (between Reserve Ave & Riverside Circle). Park in the Carilion garage.

Bike Relief

Details

We need several volunteers on bikes to ride the course from course marshal to course marshal offering a rest break so they can go to the nearest aid station to use the restroom and refill water, etc. We will provide a map and a section of course to ride, and you will do a loop several times until the last runners go through.

VDOT Certified Flagger High Priority

You must be 18-88 years old to volunteer for this task.

Certified Flaggers are needed at key intersections where runners cross traffic. Volunteers must hold a current VDOT flagger certification card. If you do not hold a current certification, you may sign up for this, email molly@blueridgeracing.net and we will work with you to get the training and certification (takes about 1 hour).

Medical Volunteers

You must be 21-90 years old to volunteer for this task.

Details

Medical volunteers will be needed at each aid station and at the finish line. Time of assignment will vary depending on your assigned location. A pre-race briefing will occur at 6:00 am at the finish line/medical tent area. All medical volunteers must be currently certified as an EMT, Paramedic, LPN, RN, PA or MD and must submit credentials prior to race day. If not in contact with Dr. Kasmer, please list your medical license number in the "Note to Race" box during registration. Medical students interested in 'shadowing' please contact Dr. Kasmer at mekasmer@carilionclinic.org Time slots will vary; aid stations volunteers may finish as early as 11:00 am, whereas other later in the day may start at 9:00 am and finish closer to 3 pm. Please let us know your availability.

Are you interested in working the entire event, start to finish, and perhaps being in charge of one area of the course in a future event? If so, this job is for you. Our veteran zone captains are looking for an extra person to pair up with them so they have an extra hand and at the same time they can train you to do their job in a future race. Must be energetic, willing to work hard and wake up extra early. This position is NOT available for someone looking to earn credit for a volunteer incentive charity. Volunteers that are seriously interested in becoming staff for future events are encouraged to sign up for this position and one of the Course Prep positions on Friday.

Volunteers will walk along the first 1.25 miles of the race course behind the runners and move cones from the curb to inside the traffic lane per specific instructions given prior to race day. *The person(s) signing up for this job may also sign up to sweep one of the courses on foot if desired.*

The Course Sweeper will follow the final runner in the 10K to communicate progress to headquarters. The volunteer must provide their own bicycle and be prepared to ride up and down Mill Mtn. At check-in, pick up a bib & radio.

The volunteer will follow the last 1/2 marathon runner on bicycle and check-in regularly with headquarters to update on progress. The position requires an experienced bicycle rider. The 1/2 marathon will go up Mill Mtn. and Peakwood Dr.
