Description

Bellingham’s third annual Awareness Walk for Gastroparesis and Digestive Health takes place on Saturday, September 6th, along the scenic interurban trail between Bellingham Farmer’s market and Boulevard Park. Our goal is to raise the necessary funds to further research and improve treatment options for those suffering from a disabling digestive disorder known as gastroparesis (GP).

Interesting Facts and Demographics (Mayo Clinic, 2012)
- Gastroparesis is a condition in which the muscles of the stomach work poorly or not at all, preventing the stomach from emptying properly
- Symptoms and complications can include: severe nausea and/or vomiting, feeling of fullness after eating just a few bites, abdominal bloating, heartburn or gastric reflux, changes in blood sugar levels, lack of appetite, weight loss, fatigue and malnutrition, dysmotility of the intestines, and possibly the need for an all liquid diet or feeding tube to deliver nutrition
- GP affects more than 1.5 million Americans with over 100,000 suffering from a severe form of the disorder and millions more are increasingly diagnosed worldwide
- At least 20% of people with type 1 diabetes develop GP and it can occur in type 2 diabetes as well

Goal: To raise $5,000 with 100% proceeds going directly to research through DHA/IFFGD
