Description
This run is a celebration of what Northern State has to offer with the new trails built by the Skagit Trail Builders! There is no clock, no bibs, no times (everyone but me wears a watch), and best of all NO FEE! Yes, there will be the traditional mass start at 10 AM and a finish line will be there. Runners will run their pace whether it be racing, cruising, jogging, or like me lollygagging (Yes, I will be plodding along with everyone). The idea is for runners of all abilities to gather to come experience the beauty of Northern State by running over two handcrafted bridges over Hill Creek then through the towering Cedar, Douglas Fir, and Spruce trees. After the race, runners can enjoy the fellowship of those who ran with you while sharing the beauty of what you had just witnessed!
The course will be well marked. Mile markers will be in place, And yes, it is an accurate 10K trail route as well as 4 Mile route!
Skagit Runners will be bringing muffins to go along with the warm beverages provided generously by Starbucks!
No Dogs or Strollers. Sorry

Song Sparrow 10K Map
The run will probably start on the road down by the cannery to avoid the wet field. Runners will run up and around the barns and to the upper area of the farm where they will continue on the gravel road down to the Access Road that leads up to the Skagit Trail Builder Trails. Here runners will take a left to the trailhead for for a short way then left down to Pumphouse Bridge where they will cross Hill Creek.
Upon arrival at the first meadow junction, the 1st time, runners will take a left on the North Meadow Trail then veer left onto the North Knoll Trail. Upon arrival at the junction that leads to Song Sparrow Bridge, runners will take a left to Song Sparrow Bridge. Upon leaving Song Sparrow runners will go left up to the end of the trail then turn right down the road. At the Elk Trail Jct runners will be directed right to the short Elk Trail where they will come to Hill Creek Trail and take a left that leads down back to the Pumphouse Bridge.
Back at Pumphouse Bridge Jct, runners will take a right and cross Pumphouse Bridge a 2nd time. Now at the meadow junction for the 2nd time, you will just go straight and stay on Pumphouse Trail that will take you to the Jct and take a right over to Song Sparrow Bridge again. Once again upon leaving Song Sparrow, you go left again and run up the trail and then all the way down to the road that leads back to the Helmick Parking area.
Instead of following exactly the route you took at the beginning, you now will have to detour (see map below) at the top of the hill and run a short loop on what I call the middle field road. Then you return to the road to run around the barns again to the finish.
Easy peasy! If you follow the signs....
There are really just 2 spots (see the next map posted) where you do something different coming to the same junction. The first is where you come to the Junction of North Meadow Trail after leaving Pumphouse Bridge while on Pumphouse Trail. First time you take a left, second time go straight. Follow the signs.
Secondly, it is where you are running down the Access Road. You come to the staging area used for trail building where the first time you take a right onto Elk Trail that leads you to Hill Creek Trail. 2nd time you go straight down the hill.
Song Sparrow 4 Mile Route
If a 10K seems to be too ambitious there is an option to just run 4 Miles. Instead of turning right at the Pumphouse Bridge, runners will exit the trail system and head back down the road to the finish line. 4 Milers will NOT take the middle road loop OR do another loop around the barns but just veer right at the Y intersection and head to the 4 Mile Finish. It will be well marked!!!
2 Junctions, 2 Different Results for 10K Runners only 1 result for 4 Milers!!!
Here are the two junctions where 10K Runners do something different. First time in blue sign with arrow, second is yellow sign with arrow.
If you are a 4 Mile Runner, you will follow 10K runners for their first loop but upon arriving at the Pumphouse Bridge after the 3 mile mark, you just exit the trail system. Look for the ORANGE straight sign at bridge jct.
The 2 Junction Directional Signs
After crossing Pumphouse Bridge onto the the Pumphouse Trail, you will come to a trail junction where North Meadow Trail is to the left and Pumphouse Trail just goes straignt. Here will be a sign directing you to take a LEFT the 1ST time there and just stay on trail that veers RIGHT the 2ND time.
Up on intersection of Access Road and Elk Trail runners will be faced with 2 choices. First time both 10K and 4 Mile runners will take a right on Elk Trail to Hill Creek Trail. 2nd time the 10K runners will just run straight down the Access Road.
SOUNDS CONFUSING BUT BLUE THE FIRST TIME AND YELLOW THE 2ND!!!
2 Routes to 2 Finish Lines
10Kers will take a different route than 4 milers to their respective finish lines. There will be 2 junctions where runners will take a different turn. Each will have a sign basically in the middle of the road directing runners which way to go.
