Why "Children of the Sun"?
The Children of the Sun Half Marathon is named after the trail that hosts our race. Today, it is owned and maintained by Washington State Department of Transportation, but that name carries a much deeper meaning.
“Children of the Sun” is a phrase connected to the Spokane Tribe, whose traditional stories describe their people as descendants of the sun. The name reflects a deep connection to this land and to the history of the Spokane region.
Runners will begin their journey at Wildhorse Park and head north along the trail. To the east lies miles of railroad tracks and rolling hills. To the west lies the Hillyard Historic Business District; A neighborhood shaped by railroads, industry, and generations of working-class Spokane families.
