Do you know the facts about Shaken Baby Syndrome?
- SBS, while 100% preventable, is the leading cause of child abuse deaths in the US.
- An infant is more likely to die from SBS than they are from drowning, a motor vehicle crash, poisoning, fire, and electrocution combined.
- At least one baby will be admitted to the hospital for SBS before you finish your workday.
- Most victims are shaken before they learn to crawl, speak their first word, or grow their first tooth.
- The average cost for each hospitalization for a victim of SBS is higher than annual median household income in the US.
- A Shaken Baby's chance of survival is the same as someone diagnosed with cancer (1/4 of victims die).
- Of those victims who survive, the overwhelming majority suffer lifelong effects that can include:
- Physical disabilities
- Learning disabilities
- Cerebral Palsy
- Seizures
- Blindness
- Speech disabilities
- Behavior disorders
