AED's for Runners
5Kevents.org is well aware of the need for AED's and the value they have at events.  To help keep our participants safe if a SCA ( sudden cardiac arrest ) occurs, 5Kevents is initiating fund-raising efforts that will go toward the purchase of automated external defibrillators (AED) for the use at all future events. We hope to raise enough funds to have two units at all future events. One at the finish-line and one mobile unit for the course marshall's.

We will also orchestrate a group training program for our staff, volunteers and those who wish to learn the technique of CPR. Seconds count and any delay in CPR and AED access decreases the victim’s chance of survival. Because 1st responders can't be everywhere at every moment, 5Kevents.org wants to help ensure that our running community is prepared when this type of emergency occurs. The more people who recognize SCA when it happens, and are prepared to react appropriately with proper CPR technique and AED equipment, the safer our athletes and our communities will be.

Last August one of our participants suffered a heart attack 400 ft from the starting line. Because of the quick and constant efforts of fellow runners who administered CPR for over 7 Minutes until the ambulance arrived with an AED, this gentleman's life was saved. With your help, it is our goal to have AED's available at all future events.

In 2017, Luc Bernard participated in the Border War 5K in Kenosha. He was a seemingly healthy elite triathlete who unexpectedly suffered from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). His survival was miraculous and was a result of being in the right place, surrounded by the right people who were diligent in their efforts to make sure he was given every chance to live.
