Justice Jog

On Saturday, September 29th, 2018, people from across Wisconsin will join together to support victims of child abuse and walk to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. Funds raised at Justice Jog will support SBS prevention efforts and awareness events in the community.

REGISTRATION DETAILS:
Adult registration fee – $25 (includes t-shirt)
Adult registration fee after Friday, September 7 – $30 (t-shirt not guaranteed)
First Responders – Free (discount will be applied during registration process, optional t-shirt $10)
Child (17 and under) – Free (optional t-shirt $10)

Do you know the facts about Shaken Baby Syndrome?

• SBS, while 100% preventable, is the leading cause of child abuse deaths in the US.
• An infant is more likely to die from SBS than they are from drowning, a motor vehicle crash, poisoning, fire, and electrocution combined.
• At least one baby will be admitted to the hospital for SBS before you finish your workday.
• Most victims are shaken before they learn to crawl, speak their first word, or grow their first tooth.
• The average cost for each hospitalization for a victim of SBS is higher than annual median household income in the US.
• A Shaken Baby's chance of survival is the same as someone diagnosed with cancer (1/4 of victims die).
• Of those victims who survive, the overwhelming majority suffer lifelong effects that can include:
  • Physical disabilities
  • Learning disabilities
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Seizures
  • Blindness
  • Speech disabilities
  • Behavior disorders

Lola's Hope

Justice Jog will benefit Lola’s Hope Inc., a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by families impacted by Shaken Baby Syndrome. The mission of Lola’s Hope is to support families impacted by shaken baby syndrome and prevent shaken baby syndrome through education, awareness and community outreach. Some examples of Lola's Hope's endeavors include:

• Distributing educational materials and raising awareness at fairs, parades, and community events
• Hosting community events such as Trunk or Treat and Bowling for Babes
• Providing Shaken Baby Prevention education in local high schools which meets requirements set forth by Wisconsin law
• Providing Shaken Baby Prevention training to childcare providers which meets requirements set forth by Wisconsin law
• Providing care packages to victim families
• Connecting victim families with the Waukesha County Victim/Witness Assistance Program’s monthly support group
• Accompanying families of victims to court proceedings
• Hosting events to foster family networking and give families an often much needed opportunity for socialization and sense of “normalcy”
• Presenting at conferences including the International Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (presented in Denver in 2014, Montreal in 2016 and Orlando in 2018), WECA Annual Childcare Conference and Waukesha County Childcare Appreciation Dinner
• Online awareness efforts and family support

Waukesha County Victim Victim/Witness Assistance Program

The Waukesha County Victim/Witness Assistance Program provides crucial support services to victims of crime in the county. They established a monthly SBS support group facilitated by a licensed clinical social worker (first of its kind in the state) and partner with local non-profit groups to provide family-friendly events for the community.
