About High Rocks

Our mission is to EDUCATEEMPOWER and INSPIRE young people in West Virginia.

High Rocks is an award winning youth empowerment organization serving young people in Pocahontas, Nicholas, and Greenbrier County West Virginia. We seek to inspire a culture of learning in our area that prepares rural Appalachian youth with the skills and ideas to drive change locally and on the national stage. Our year-round activities include college-access programs, service trips, youth leadership and advocacy training, tutoring, youth mentoring, promotion of the High Rocks educational model, and the development of community gardens.  We also operate two youth centers, one in Greenbrier and one in Nicholas County, that serve to provide youth with a safe place for learning, socializing, creative projects and community engagement. Our summer programs include two two-week academically intensive camps for girls and college interns—New Beginnings, for 7th graders, and Camp Steele, for older girls. These camps teach young women the critical thinking, team building, conflict resolution and creative skills they need to be future leaders in their communities. We offer rigorous classes in diverse topics, from Outdoor Science to Arts and Activism, challenging our students to develop intellectually while providing a safe and judgment free learning environment.  All our programs are free of charge, in reflection of the demographic needs of the population we serve.

The sparse population, geographic remoteness, and poor local economy make our area, while beautiful, the definition of  “underserved.” We have a high poverty rate and poor educational outcomes by most measures. Poor educational outcomes have the effect of silencing local voices and continuing familial cycles of dependency, violence, prescription drug abuse and poverty.

We gain generations of leadership when young people have the confidence and skills to participate fully in our democratic society. We believe that by investing in youth, we are investing in a vibrant, sustainable future for us all.

HIGH ROCKS IS A PLACE WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGED TO STEP UP AS LEADERS EVERY DAY.
