FAQs

How do I Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® virtually?

Make sure you are registered on RunSignUp via www.walkamilecc.org and let your friends and family members know you are walking and fundraising, so they can join in too! On April 10-11th, take a walk wherever you can safely do so: in your home, yard, neighborhood, on a treadmill, or at a local park.

TAKE PICTURES! Post any pictures or videos to your personal Facebook or Instagram accounts using the hashtags #RCISWalkaMile2021 and #RCISWalks2021. On Facebook, please tag @RCISofCarrollCounty and share to our event, “Walk a Mile 2021.” On Instagram please tag @RCISofCC.

One of the advantages of walking virtually is that anyone, anywhere can join in! Consider reaching out  to interested friends and family members who wouldn’t normally be able to make the trip to Carroll County.

Can I still participate if I don’t have social media?

Absolutely! Pictures can also be sent to lkwhite@rapecrisiscc.org . If you send us pictures or other media, you are giving us permission to post them publicly. Please clearly indicate if you would prefer us not to use your name in a public post.

How much does it cost to participate?

Registration fees are as follows: $10 general, $5, 12 and under.

Will I still get a T-shirt?

Unfortunately, due to the logistics of distribution, we will no longer be able to provide T-shirts for the walk this year. However, an "I believe in survivors" mask is available for purchase. We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment. We are providing masks for purchase.

How are funds raised at Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® used?

Funds raised are used to provide free and confidential services to people in our community who have been impacted by sexual violence. These services include a 24-hour hotline (410-857-7322), free counseling with a licensed therapist, hospital/court/police accompaniments, walk-in crisis intervention services, educational programs, and referrals.

We are still serving our clients every day, and your support is more important than ever to us! Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® is one of only two annual fundraisers that support our work each year.

Can women walk too?

Absolutely! This event primarily focuses on getting men involved, but we believe that both men, women and children walking together sends a powerful message of support and solidarity. Sexual violence effects everyone of every gender!

Do I have to register before the event?

We encourage everyone who would like to participate to register if they are able. RCIS continues to provide free and confidential services to survivors of sexual violence in Carroll County and beyond and your support is more important to the continuation of these services than ever!

How do I register?

Visit www.walkamilecc.org to register.

Can teams enter?

Absolutely! During registration you will have the opportunity to create a team. Once you have registered, others can join your team during their registration process.

Do you offer refunds?

We are unfortunately not able to facilitate refunds at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I can’t join the virtual walk, but I still want to support RCIS. What can I do?

You can also make a donation via our website (https://www.rapecrisiscc.org/donate/), send a check to RCIS, or donate to a team or registered walker through RunSignUp!

Do I have to raise additional funds to participate in the walk?

We encourage every walker to raise $25, but it is not a requirement.

What if a friend or family member wants to donate but doesn't have access to the internet?

A donation can be made by check by mailing to: RCIS, PO Box 1563, Westminster MD 21158. Please have your friend or family member indicate on the check or in an enclosed letter that their donation is for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, and reference your name so that we can apply it properly to you or your team.

Do I have to wear high heels?

High heels are not required, but they are a fun and challenging addition to this event! If you would prefer, consider wearing other types of footwear such as colorful flip-flops or fluffy slippers.

Do I have to provide my own shoes?

Yes! Unfortunately, we are not able to provide shoes. Depending on your shoe size you might be able to find shoes at local retailers, or online at Amazon, or ledame.com.

Do I really have to walk a mile?

Traditionally, the route we walk together is one mile, but this year is certainly a little different! You can use a step counter (apps are available for any smartphone) to count one mile, but please feel free to shorten your route if you are unable to walk a full mile for any reason. Even if you’re just taking a couple circuits around your house, we’d love to see your virtual walk pictures!

Will there be awards?

Yes, we have an award for highest individual fundraiser and an award for highest team fundraiser. To be eligible for the highest individual award, you cannot be a member of a team.

How do I become a sponsor?

Please visit www.walkamilecc.org for more information on sponsorship.
