Russell L. Platt Pavilion
This 5K Race Initiative celebrates the efforts of the late Dr. Russell L. Plat who worked tirelessly to bring awareness of disparities with diabetes, high blood pressure, and the risk of stroke among African American men. The overall health and wellness of the black community is dependent on the health of black men in the community. African American men are dying from preventable diseases at 10 times the rate of other men. Parallel to our partners, we believe making a lasting difference in lives improves the health and well-being for all.
The goal of the West Akron 5k is to unite the community in a spirit of wellness and philanthropy while raising funds to benefit our students. With the support of United Baptist Church, The Akron NAACP, Summa Health, the Gus Johnson Community Foundation, CareSource, Akron Children’s Hospital, Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, this year’s race is on track to do just that with the help and support of our long-time sponsors.
