About this Race Series

In it's 18th year the RNUTS series gives you the chance to run trail races ranging from 5k to marathon from January through May 31st.  Start your year out right, with great, well run, challenging races with a great group of people.

2026 Rules, Eligibility and Fees

What is this series all about?  Do you really have to be nuts?  Isn’t this going to a lot of trouble for pumpkin bread?
This series has been created to showcase the trails in and around the Roanoke Valley, and if you aren’t already, help turn you into a Mountain Junkie.   We need more of you, to help us feel normal.

The RNUTS
What we have for you is a one of a kind experience.  Each of these races are held in beautiful locations, contain different types of trail, possess different levels of challenge, and have been picked to push your limits and provide you with a great trail running experience.

Results posted to the web the same day as the race, and at most races we’ll have pictures taken and posted for you free of charge.
This series has been set up so that you can comfortably increase your race mileage over the course of the year and/or from year to year.  

Start the New Year off right with the Frozen Toe 10k. This race is on a favorite trail of ours; the Chestnut Ridge Loop Trail, in Roanoke.  Next, we have a true backcountry tough event on the Glenwood Horse Trail, the Forever 5 & 10 Milers (Day Creek Day Use Area).  Then we head onto the 5 or 8.4 miler at Montvale Park, then head onto the a 10k or half marathon at at Falling Creek Park in Bedford, next up will be the Mineshaft 10k, another race on the Glenwood Horse Trail (Bearwallow Day Use Area), the the Twisted Trail 10k at New London Tech Trails, and finally finish with the anchor event at Carvins Cove, the Conquer the Cove 25k & Marathon a course that will have you grinning and/or cursing all along the way.

You won’t regret the challenge we’ve created for you.

There is a fee to enter.  This series fee is separate and in addition to the race registration fees.
The series fee helps us cover some of the costs associated with the series finisher award (Custom Printed Outdoor Research ActiveIce Spectrum Sun Hoodie – retail price of $90), overall and age group awards, series prizes and the post series social.
Points are retroactive.  For instance, you do the Frozen Toe and Explore Your Limits and then decide to register for the series, your points for the Frozen Toe and Mineshaft will be added retroactively.
