Event Description

HPRS Trail Work in Fairplay, CO

Background: The Human Potential Running Series (HPRS), owned and operated by Human Potential LLC, has officially adopted 11 miles of trail. We have done this to continue our mission of building a better ultra community for our runners and improving the relationships between ultra runners and the land managers we work with.

In cooperation with the United States Forest Service—Pike National Forest South Park Ranger District, we have adopted 11 miles of trail in the South Park Valley. The 11 miles comprise four different segments of trail. Three of those segments are routes we use for our Silverheels Trail Runs, held annually in July. The fourth segment is part of the Sheep Mountain Ultras, held annually in August.

WHY: (Besides it being the right thing to do) Many races require their participants to complete at least 8 hours of volunteer service before running in their event. The Human Potential Running Series requires 8 hours of volunteer service to be able to participate in the Silverheels 100-Mile and Sangre de Cristo 100-Mile Endurance Runs (Though runners can opt out of this requirement by submitting a $150 donation to our beneficiaries).

Due to the growing number of races requiring volunteer work and our own requirements, HPRS is also proud to adopt these trails to better serve the Colorado ultrarunning community in fulfilling these requirements. Every year, HPRS will release a trail work schedule to allow folks to plan which workdays they'd like to attend between June and October.

Trail maintenance requires moderate physical labor.  Volunteers will be hiking with five to seven-pound tools in hand.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be in good physical condition
  • Be able to use a variety of tools, including shovels, picks and rakes
  • Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • Be prepared for numerous and changing environmental conditions

WHAT TO BRING & WEAR:

  • Closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required. No open-toed shoes or sandals of any kind will be allowed.
  • Work gloves
  • Plenty of water (2 quarts minimum)
  • Rain gear
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent
  • Toilet paper (recommended)
  • A day pack
  • Food and drink for the day
  • A good attitude and willingness to work

Your volunteering also qualifies you for an HPRS Trail Work Comp, which you can "cash in" for an entry to any race. To learn more about our other volunteer opportunities and how to "cash in" your comp, visit our website HERE.

MAKE A WEEKEND OUT OF IT! This is one of two days we'll perform trail work on this specific weekend. We welcome you to join us in our trail work weekend by camping out with us (Friday and/or Saturday Nights) and pitching in for one or both work days.
