What will this swim mean to me and possibly others? First of all, my efforts in the swim are dedicated to Dick Stimson. Dick and I were pretty good friends in high school where we were teammates on U of D High’s swim team in Detroit. Dick recently died after many years challenging all the obstacles presented by multiple sclerosis.
Dick and I, along with another friend, Bill Cleary got our first taste of the St. Clair River in the 1960’s when we swam the width of the river from Port Huron to Sarnia, Ontario. That was sponsored by the Port Huron Recreation Department. That event constituted an international swim long before there was much concern about border security. We swam the event in less than twenty minutes, so the Fitzgerald swim this year will be quite different, no quarter mile swim but more like thirty or thirty two miles for four members of our relay team.
I hope you will consider supporting me and the event. It is certainly an historic, once-in-a-lifetime adventure that will carry on the legacy of the 29 men lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald 50 years ago. By helping me meet my fundraising goal, you are also helping preserve the Whitefish Point Lighthouse that safeguards mariners along Lake Superior's "Shipwreck Coast.”
