Last Spring I was shocked when I was told I had Invasive Lobular Carcinoma. I had been getting regular 3D mammograms, which always came back negative. But my new OBGyn had recommended I get a Contrast Mammogram because of my how dense my breasts are. The contrast found the cancer. Turns out, the cancer was on my previous 3D mammogram but they couldn't see it because of the density. So likely I had it for almost 2 years! Lobular BC is like a spider web, not a lump, so it hides amongst the dense tissue.
Surgery and radiation followed, along with a hormone inhibitor medication for 7 years but I am doing great now. I am extremely thankful for the UVA Breast Center, the Physicians there, the entire staff and the Contrast Mammogram they offer. I believe it's the only one in Virginia, since I've told friends about it in other areas and they can't find one.
All women with dense breasts should get something more than a 3D mammo! The alternative to a contrast one is an MRI mammo.
I'm so happy to have a found the cancer when I did!
