Blood Clots don't discriminate and neither should you. Never assume that someone is not suffering a medical emergency based on their characteristics.
- Black or African American people have up to 60% higher rates of life-threatening venous blood clots than white people
- 100,000 to 300,000 deaths from blood clots occur each year, which is greater than the total number of people who lose their lives each year to AIDS, breast cancer, and motor vehicle crashes combined.
600,000 non-fatal cases of deadly blood clots occur each year, of which 40% are blood clots in the lungs and 60% are blood clots in the legs. - The cumulative incidence of VTE increases with age, with women having a higher risk than men at age 50, 70, and 100.
- Women taking postmenopausal hormone therapy are two to four times more likely to develop a blood clot.
- Women who use the birth control ring are 6.5 times more likely to get blood clots than women who don't use birth control.
- Women are five times more likely to experience a venous thromboembolism (VTE) during pregnancy, childbirth, or the three months after delivery. Pulmonary embolism (PE), a blood clot that travels from a deep vein to a lung, is a common cause of pregnancy-related death in the United States.
- Overall, nearly 1 in every 10,000 children will develop DVT or blood clot. They are more common among those that are hospitalized, as 1 in 200 hospitalized children develop blood clots – but pediatric DVT rates are increasing.
