Yes I am doing it again....51.7 miles on the Virginia Capital Trail, Jamestown to Richmond raising funds to support The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation's transportation fund where assistance is provided to cancer patients to ensure they can get to and from their appointments and their treatments. Whether it be via a gas card or transportation services, your help in support of my efforts will ease the heavy burden for those patients who struggle to simply get to treatment. .
Challenge, that is what many patients are faced with beyond their disease, the difficulties of the logistics. Last year many of you supported me and followed along my 5 day journey in walking the 51.7 miles. It was a fun, beautiful and meaningful experience for me and shall I say, rather easy. Having been a patient I do understand the word "challenge". When I lost my leg to cancer 13 years ago I was forced to learn to do everything differently. The simplest of things were hard at best in the beginning and as I gained confidence, I understood that my life moving forward would be about problem solving, managing frustration and constantly adapting to life of physical challenges.
This year is going to test all that I have overcome the past 13 years and my ability to persevere. I am scheduled for surgery at VCU on September 26 on my knee. I have injured the only leg that I have and it needs to be fixed so that I can get on with my life the way I want to live, actively, enthusiastically and with a sense of adventure and purpose. Right now I have no way to exactly anticipate my recovery but I will complete this challenge. It may take me longer. I may have to get creative at times. I may have to ride a bike for part of the way. I may have to use a hand-cycle. I may have to use crutches some of the way. I do not know yet. But one thing I can say, I will for sure, adapt and cover the distance in an effort to to raise funds and support The Hawthorne Cancer Foundation's Transportation Fund. To date, 158 gas cards have been distributed that allowed recipients to meet the demands of their medical transportation needs.
I know I will have a delayed start because I will need a few weeks into October to recover. But I plan to be finished on or by November 18. That is my birthday and I will celebrate many things.
So please follow along as my journey continues. 51.7 miles. One leg? No legs? Hands only? Who knows! You support me and I WILL find a way and together we will make a difference easing the burden on a local cancer patients.
COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, I AM DOING IT AGAIN!
Thank you in advance for your support!
