On the Trail to End Colorectal Cancer

Help support the Colorectal Cancer Alliance as I prepare to run the Grand Circle Trailfest event!

I've committed to raise money to support the Colorectal Cancer Alliance by registering as a Charity Bib for this event.

MY STORY

I got two phone calls from my son Britt on my 60th birthday. The first was from his home in Chicago when he called to wish me a happy birthday. It was a loving, joyful call: the perfect start to the day. The second was later that afternoon from Rush Hospital, to tell me that he’d been having some stomach issues for a few weeks and wisely had gone to an emergency clinic to get checked out. The results had come back from a CT scan sometime after that happy birthday phone call. The scan showed a large tumor in his colon and numerous lesions on both sides of his liver. “Go to the hospital now," they said. And in that instant our world was turned upside down.

Britt was 29 years old - healthy, fit, successful. Now he was sitting in a hospital room with a stage IV colon cancer diagnosis. This story does not have a happy ending. Britt went through more than a year of treatment including chemotherapy, surgeries, and endless searches for clinical trials and alternative treatments. Despite having access to some of the best medical care in the world, science could not keep up with his disease, and he passed away on October 17, 2023.

The incidence of early onset colorectal cancer is rising at an alarming rate. The mission of the Colorectal Cancer Alliance is to end this disease in our lifetime. Their advocacy focuses on screening, magnifying support, and accelerating research.

Please support me as I spread awareness at Trailfest and beyond. Your donation will have a direct impact in saving someone else’s son or daughter, brother or sister, mother or father.

A portion of my fundraiser will also go to The Wander Project, a non-profit organization that supports special projects in our National Parks.

Double Your Donation Today!

Does your company have a gift matching program? Check with your HR department to see if your company matches employee gifts. If they do, take advantage of this opportunity to double your contribution today!

Please note that matching gifts must be received 2 weeks prior to the race day to be counted towards your fundraising goal. Donations must also have the athlete’s name associated with the donation so we can allocate funds accordingly.

If you would like to donate to this fundraiser offline please follow the directions below to ensure it supports their charity bib. *

*Please note all mailed checks, matching gifts, or donor directed funds must be made out to Wander Project. Once we receive them they will be added to their fundraiser for this designated charity. Please include the first and last name of the fundraiser you are supporting so we can ensure your donation is matched to the correct person. If there is not a spot to designate the athlete please send us an email at info@wanderproject.org and include the gift amount, transaction date, your name, and the fundraisers name.
