Ana L. Gonzalez Perez, my Mami, was the strongest woman I have ever known. She was loving, kind, generous, resilient, tough, small, but had a presence that filled up the room. She was my constant, my safety net, the one who always reminded me of my own strength. She was also one of the almost 13,000 women who, according to the American Cancer Society, died in the United States in 2024 after battling ovarian cancer. Still, her strength never wavered; I witnessed this until she took her last breath.
I run to bring awareness, to raise money for research to find a cure because women like my Mami should never leave us so soon.
