This summer, I have the opportunity to raise awareness for Glioblastoma Research Organization as I run back to back half marathons in the Grand Tetons/Yellowstone National Parks. I will be running in honor of Blythe Powell, the amazing woman in the Bee Kind t-shirt in this photo.
I served as a caregiver to Blythe in the spring of 2024 as she had been battling brain cancer and a brain tumor. I only got to know Blythe for a few short months before she passed, however in that time she became a sweet friend. She was strong, funny, and so kind. We had fun playing cards, watching documentaries, and attempting inspirational workout videos. At the same time, I got a front row seat to the complex emotions and experiences that come with a terminal diagnosis. What stood out profoundly was the way Blythe's life had an impact on those around her. She seemed to bring people together and bring out the best in them. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity. Life is such a gift and as long as my 2 legs will run I plan to raise awareness for missions like GRO.
Glioblastoma Research Organization , is a nonprofit, founded by Amber Barbach in 2018, that raises awareness and funds for cutting-edge research to find a cure for glioblastoma. With more than 22,000 members in their online communities, my prayer is that with each dollar we raise, more and more of those fighting alone will find a community like Blythe had and a cure is found .
What is glioblastoma? Commonly known as glioblastoma multiforme or GBM, Glioblastoma is a highly malignant form of cancer that affects the brain and spinal cord. More than 13,000 Americans are diagnosed with GBM every year. GBM accounts for almost half of all cancerous brain tumors. It can affect anybody at any age, although it is more commonly found in people ages 45 to 70. It is non-genetic in nature and develops quickly. The reasons for its occurrence are unknown.
There is no cure for Glioblastoma. Treatments focus on removing or shrinking the tumor to reduce symptoms; however, they are not successful in long-term survival, making Glioblastoma a devastating diagnosis with most patients surviving an average of 12 to 18 months after diagnosis.
