A Little About Me

My name is Angela Holder, and I am the owner and race director of Race Ready Athletics LLC and CaliFlow Runs. Recently, I've been asked to address rumors circulating within the running community about our company operating without permits, among other baseless claims. I'd like to set the record straight on a few topics.
I began running in 2011 with the Couch to 5K app, participating in my first race at the Wrigley River Run, where I was introduced to the AREC (A Running Experience Club) community. That race was life-changing, and from then on, I was hooked. I joined AREC that day and have since completed countless 5Ks, over 100 half marathons, 13 marathons, 18 ultra marathons, and even a 100-miler. Running has not only transformed me personally but instilled in me a desire to give back to the community.
Over the years, I became a certified running coach and race director with the RRCA, served on AREC’s board for nine years (seven of which were as President), and became a USATF course measurer. I worked in the running event industry for eight years before co-founding High Tide Runs. I have since moved on and now I own CaliFlow Runs and Race Ready Athletics LLC.

Why CaliFlow?

I created CaliFlow because I saw an opportunity to bring more inclusivity, community, and affordability to running events. I wanted a place where every participant—fast or slow—feels like a champion and can participate at a price that doesn’t break the bank. My vision is to deliver a "big race" experience with the best elements of major events, wrapped into a smaller, community-driven package.

Do We Have Permits to Operate?

Absolutely! We are fully permitted and insured for all our events. Operating without permits or insurance would not only be illegal but also irresponsible, jeopardizing the safety of our participants. Our permits have faced challenges, especially in Long Beach, where we encountered significant delays due to alleged interference by individuals connected with competing companies. After sharing detailed documentation with city officials, all our permits were quickly approved, and the issue is currently under investigation.

Are Our Race Courses Original?

As much as possible, we strictly follow city guidelines. Beach races in cities like Santa Monica and Long Beach often have limited course options due to space and path direction, so these routes and starting points are commonly shared among different race organizers. We follow the rules set forth by the city.
Our courses in Long Beach are certified and measured to meet USATF standards, and this certification is valid for 10 years and makes them accessible to any organizer. These courses aren’t owned by any individual; they’re available for everyone to use, keeping races accessible and enjoyable for the community. These rules are set by the USATF which should speak volumes regarding course ownership.
I’m an avid trail runner myself, and I understand how much time and dedication trail event directors put into developing unique courses—often creating a deep attachment to those trails and a sense of ownership. However, when it comes to the beach path, it’s a different story. This is the same path my run club started from on Sunday mornings 40 years ago, just as it was the same starting point for Charlie Allwine races and countless others. No single person "scouted" the city’s public beach path, nor can they claim exclusive ownership of this shared space for runners.

Are We Intentionally Trying to Hurt Other Race Companies?

NO!!! While a few companies may have models similar to ours, I don’t focus on their race numbers, event photos, or operations. I see things differently because we offer a unique vibe, finish line, and overall experience that sets us apart. While one of these companies may seem similar, it’s only because I was involved in its creation, from the race names to the finish-line experience. Now that I’m no longer part of that company, you’ll see our events become increasingly distinct.
In the end, runners should have the freedom to choose the race that aligns with their schedule and preferences. Some may stick with a favorite brand, but ultimately, people should be able to run where and when they want, without pressure or drama over who organizes the event.

Challenges and Roadblocks

Since launching CaliFlow, we have encountered several challenges, including copyright claims, interference with our email and database systems, and even a coordinated attempt to flag our emails as spam. We faced permit blocks and a letter-writing campaign directed at a music festival, with individuals claiming our original name, CaliVibe Runs, caused brand confusion. These letters, sent months before the festival date and coinciding with the date of the copyright claims, appeared to be part of a coordinated effort.
At times, some of our participants with ties to other companies have even received unsolicited messages questioning their choice to run with us.
Honestly, who does that? Runners have the right to participate in any event they choose without facing smear campaigns or guilt trips.
Despite these obstacles, we remain fully committed to our mission. We changed our name to avoid any potential confusion, and we continue to rise above these challenges, dedicated to serving the running community with excellence and integrity.

A Final Word

I don’t enjoy drama, and all this negativity is a huge bummer. I truly believe that the energy you put into the world is what you get back. So, I’m addressing these issues with honesty, once and for all, and then letting them go. My hope is that these attacks will eventually stop and that people focus on their own paths and their own events.
In my view, some individuals prefer to disrupt our operations rather than rise to the standards we set. At CaliFlow, we’re committed to delivering an exceptional race experience with fully stocked aid stations, knowledgeable staff, quality hydration, and a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere. Our events feature exciting themes, an incredible photographer, and the best photo stops along the course.
We set a high bar, and we’re not deterred by those who spread misinformation or attempt to undermine us. My priority remains steadfast: to provide quality, enjoyable, and inclusive events the community can rely on.
We’re here to keep the vibe high, stress low, and the experience memorable.
