What do you need to get started

You can spend thousands on the sport of triathlon, but you don’t have to.  Our goal is to get more people doing triathlon.  So, if you are interested in trying a triathlon, here is the minimum gear necessary.

1. Bike Helmet – this is a must. Almost all races require them but more important than that the need to protect your head. No helmet – no race and therefore no helmet – no training with our team

2. Bike - Yes, you will need a bike.  No, it does not need to be expensive.  We see people do triathlons on their old mountain bikes, hybrids, or other slower bikes. But if you have a choice, use a road bike even if you must borrow one.

3. Sunglasses – this is a safety necessity. It is less about the sun than about keeping debris and bugs from getting in your eyes during the bike ride.

4. A good pair of running shoes. These can be worn for the bike and run portions.

5. A pair of compression shorts. If you can, purchase a pair of tri shorts. You will be swimming, biking and running in the same shorts. Tri shorts dry quickly after the swim and have just a bit of a seat pad to make the bike more comfortable.

6. A moisture wicking type shirt to be pulled on after the swim and for women – a sports bra or swim top

If you enjoy your triathlon experience (and we believe you will), our coaches and team leaders can help you decide if you wish to upgrade or purchase more equipment. This can include the following: a trisuit or wetsuit, cycling shoes and clip pedals for your bike, or possible electronics to help track your progress.
