EVENT HISTORY

The Valley Isle Road Runners are the original founders of the race.
Seven teams ran the very first year. The race initially consisted of 1 mile legs in the first year but teams ran longer legs toward the end of the race. UH track team held the record, 4hrs and 20 min for the fastest time but that was when they did 1 mile legs.
Aaron Altura had a team that holds the running record based on the current leg setup of about 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Another team ran faster than Aaron’s team but was disqualified for being jerks and their check bounced and was never paid.

The relay in the early years quickly developed into one of Hawaii’s top competitive relay races. Teams from across the state would come. Top runners representing their island would compete, Kauai, Big Island, Oahu, and Maui were all represented in most of the early events mostly sponsored by a company. Since Joe Alueta started directing in 1993 he moved the race to a more fun event with goofy prizes.

In 2020 - 2022 COVID put a dead stop to all events worldwide and Hawaii was no exception.

2023 - This year was the first Hana Relay since COVID-19. We wanted to restart with a small event of 25 teams and not overrun Hana with our event.

Beat The Heat

October 5, 2024 - Registration will open soon!

Come join us on Saturday, October 5th, 2024 for our Beat The Heat Run/Walk. It would be nice to see everyone's smiling faces once again at this free group run and potluck gathering. We will meet at Keokea Park at 4:00 and start our run/walk at 4:30, out and back on Thompson Road.

The annual Beat The Heat gathering was postponed in September of 2023 due to the tragic events that occurred during the recent wildfires. We have all been affected by this in one way or another and sometimes we need to take a break from reality and gather with families and friends.

Although the run/walk is free to members we ask that you sign up in order for us to get a head count of who will attend for our pot luck gathering.  Please come out and join us!  We will look forward to seeing many of you there!

Event Description:
The run starts at Keokea Park and runs out to the end of Thompson Road and back to the park, a total of 3.4 miles. The weather is usually cool, around 74 degrees and overcast. This is a great opportunity to meet other members and Board Directors. Runners are encouraged to bring something to the table for a potluck.

There is plenty of parking and there are restrooms in the park.  We will be collecting donations for the Maui Food Bank.  Please bring a non-perishable food item to donate.  You may also bring a monetary donation or  Click here to make a direct donation to the Maui Food Bank.
