bg6000 Beginner Training Schedule for 2026

Weekday Schedule

Sunday: Stretch & Strength

Location: Home or the gym

Sundays are not Rundays for us. Take a moment to stretch. Do some mobility excercises, maybe a little core strength

Here's a progressive strength training program for beginner runners you can follow on youtube

Monday [5:30pm]: Interval Runs

Location: StretchZone

1131 Fairview Ave Ste 102, Bowling Green, KY 42103

Monday evenings we will meet at StretchZone on Fairview, take a short walk to the alley on Collett Lane. Once there we will begin our interval workouts. For example, when the plan says 3x200 we will run for 200 meters followed by a rest break, repeating three times.  Interval workouts help us build speed by running faster thasn we usually do for short intervals.

Tuesday [5:30pm]: Fleet Feet Group Run

Location: Fleet Feet Bowling Green

1945 Scottsville Rd Ste A-5, Bowling Green, KY 42104

Our Tuesday group meets at Fleet Feet for a run through the neighborhood. The tuesday workouts are jog/walk intervals that progresses to more jogging and less walking as the weeks go by

Wednesday [5:30pm]: Running up that Hill

Location: White Squirrel Brewery

302 State St, Bowling Green, KY 42101

The race we are preparing for is NOT flat. Not to worry because our Wedneday workouts will have us more than ready. We will meet at White Squirrel, head towards the square, then turn on main street to do jog/walk intervals up Hospital Hill until one day we can run up that whole hill.

Thursday [5:30pm]: Kereiakes Park Group Run

Location: Kereiakes Park [The Shelter near the Tennis Courts]

1220 Fairview Ave, Bowling Green, KY 42103

Thursday workouts are mirror our Tuesday workouts, just on a different side of town to break up the monotony. The Running Club meets every Thursday at Kereiakes Park.  Some evenings the running club has dinner meetings afterwards, occaisionally, we will move the run to a restuarant

Friday: Rest Day

You deserve it. you need it. We've got a big run tomorrow.

Saturday [6:30am]: Street Sharks Long Run

Location: Bowling Green Ballpark

300 E 8th Ave, Bowling Green, KY 42101

The long run is the cornerstone of the training program. We will meet and train alongside the Street Sharks, the official training group for bg26.2 and Half Marathon. Our workouts will take place along the same streets we will run on race day. There will be a sign in and drawings for giveaways before the run. If you attend 10+ Saturday group runs, you will earn "Street Shark Status" and gear.

FAQ

Q: "What if I'm not in shape? I'm not a runner AT ALL."

A: Great! this is the program for you! Many runners start with training groups like these that are designed to challenge you gradually so you can safely build up to running longer as the weeks go by until you can finish your first race ever.

Q: "How much does the training program cost?"

A: The training program is free.  Just come run with us.

Q: "When and where do we meet?"

A: We will be meeting with the BG Run Club group runs on Tuesday and Thursdays at 5:30pm as well as Street Sharks workouts on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Check the Community Calendar for run group dates and locations.

Q: "What if I miss a workout?"

A: It's fine, almost nobody makes every single workout. Training plans are designed to account for life happening. Sometimes we get sick, vacation falls in the middle of training plan. Download the training plan, put it on your fridge and do the workout when you can fit it in your schedule.  If you miss it, just do the next one, you'll be fine.

Q: "What if my schedule doesnt allow me to make all the runs?"

A: That's totally understandable, maybe you have class or bible study the same time as the group run.  Download the plan, and run it at a different time. Meet us on the days you can, fly solo on the days you cannot. Come to the Saturday runs, you might find another runner or two who can train at the same time as you.

Q: "Can I join the training group after July 11th?"

A: Of course you can!  Just meet us at one of our group runs. Check the Community Calendar for run group dates and locations.
