"Good morning, Sunshine. Here's a heart for you." These simple yet powerful words came from Eli as he walked through the hospital, spotting a mom and two teenage girls—one of whom was in tears. The moment he shared his kindness, they all stopped, smiled, and felt just a little bit lighter. Then, as always, Eli kept bouncing along, spreading joy as he went.
This is who Eli is.
His nurses know it, too. "Eli, we need you. Do you have a minute to come brighten someone's day?" they ask when a patient needs a lift. Without hesitation, Eli walks in, offers a big smile, and forms one of his signature hand hearts—a simple gesture that changes everything.
Even the patients take notice. "Is he on the cheering-up committee? Because it's the perfect job for him," one asked his teachers after Eli stepped in to offer comfort.
I share these moments because Eli has begun his year-long internship at Memorial Regional Hospital through Project Search. Over the course of this internship, he’s worked in the IVCU unit, Cath Lab, and is now in Wound Care. He has the unique ability to pierce through sadness and uncertainty in his daily work. Though he may not realize it, he truly touches, supports and strengthens those around him.
Eli isn’t the only one stepping into a new role. I’m thrilled to announce that I am currently serving as the Chair of the Board for the Autism Society of Central Virginia. This organization is deeply personal to me, just as it is to so many families in our community. Last year, ASCV provided 459 programs for over 11,000 participants and supported 774 members—each number representing a life touched, a family supported, and a strengthen community.
