Fifteen years ago, when Dylan came into our lives, we knew he was special. From the start, he had a smile that would melt you and a heart full of love. Never would we have thought, but as the years went on, we faced the challenges that come with severe autism. Dylan is nonverbal, and for a long time, we struggled to connect with him in ways that felt natural.
But here’s what I’ve learned: communication isn’t just about words. It’s in the way Dylan holds our hands when he needs comfort, or every once in a while when he finds our eyes. If you are lucky enough to ever get a hug from Dylan, it is heaven!!! The best is when he is able to regulate in the quite moments and simply rests his head against us, letting us know he feels safe. I also feel safe in that moment.
Dylan has worked incredibly hard over the years. Though he doesn’t speak, he’s found ways to express himself. Through patience, therapy, and an incredible amount of love, we’ve seen him make progress—progress that once felt impossible. Every small victory, from making eye contact, potty training, sleeping, to learning new routines, has been a giant leap in our world.
This year, we are running for Dylan at the Baltimore Zoo, celebrating his journey and raising awareness for autism. Dylan may not be able to tell you his story, but we can. He is a fighter, a sweetheart, and the most lovable boy you’ll ever meet. We’re running because we believe in him, in his progress, and in a future where he continues to thrive.
We invite you to join us—whether by running, donating, or simply cheering Dylan on. Every step we take is a step toward greater understanding, acceptance, and support for kids like Dylan.
Thank you for being part of his journey.
