RACE SUPPORT: SETUP
Be the backbone of the Alpha 5K Challenge! As a Setup Volunteer, you will help transform the event space into a professional, safe, and exciting race environment. This is a high-energy role perfect for those who are early risers.
Shift Details:
- Time: 5:00 AM – 8:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is race eligible! You will be finished with your setup duties before the race begins, giving you plenty of time to get ready, warm up, and participate in the Alpha 5K Challenge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Physical Infrastructure: Assist in the assembly and placement of pop-up tents, folding tables, chairs, and signage stands. Ensure all structures are safely secured using weighted sandbags or stakes.
- Course Preparation: Help deploy essential course infrastructure, including traffic cones, course tape, directional arrows, and mile markers to ensure a safe route for all participants.
- Branding & Atmosphere: Help place sponsor banners, "Registration" signage, and the "Finish Line" arch to give the event a professional look.
- General Assembly: Use provided tools (cordless drills, bungee cords, zip ties, duct tape, etc.) to securely set up and troubleshoot event displays and equipment.
Requirements:
- Ability to lift and move event equipment (tables, tents, etc.).
- Comfortable using basic hand tools (hammer, screwdriver, etc.).
- A positive attitude and a "team player" mindset for early morning hustle!
CHECK-IN, CHECK-OUT AMBASSADOR
Be the primary point of contact for our valued partners and the ultimate guardian of the Davidson Mesa Trail! As a Check-In & Check-Out Ambassador, your absolute highest priority is upholding our "Leave No Trace" ethos. You will manage the arrival and departure of all vendors and sponsors, ensuring they respect the venue and leave their designated footprint exactly as they found it.
Shift Details:
- Time: Split Shift: 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM AND 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Race Eligibility: This role is race eligible! Because this is a split shift, you will be completely free between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM to hit the starting line, run the Alpha 5K Challenge, and cool down before returning for your second shift to check out the vendors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vendor Onboarding: Greet sponsors and vendors upon early arrival, utilizing a clipboard to complete a thorough pre-event site condition checklist for their specific footprint.
- Leave No Trace Enforcement: Clearly communicate our strict environmental standards to all partners upon arrival.
- Sanitation Support: Distribute and manage heavy-duty trash bags and gloves, ensuring vendors have the sanitation tools required to manage their own waste.
- Site Restoration Verification: Conduct strict post-event Leave No Trace inspections using a targeted checklist to ensure every vendor's area has been completely restored to its original condition before they are cleared to depart.
Requirements:
- Excellent communication skills and a professional, firm demeanor for interacting with sponsors.
- A fierce commitment to environmental stewardship and the Leave No Trace philosophy.
- Strong attention to detail for meticulously completing condition checklists.
- Ability to commit to the split-shift schedule.
RUNNER CHECK-IN
Be the first friendly face every runner sees! As a Runner Check-In Volunteer, you are the front line of the Alpha 5K Challenge experience. You will manage the flow of participants, ensure they are equipped with everything they need for the race, and provide vital information to both pre-registered athletes and new, same-day sign-ups.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible due to the critical nature of the check-in process during the morning rush.
Key Responsibilities:
- Packet Distribution: Efficiently issue bib numbers, bib clips, and participant swag bags to pre-registered runners.
- Registration Management: Oversee the Same Day Registration process.
- Participant Support: Act as an information hub by sharing event maps, sharing the daily schedule of events, and answering runner questions using the provided FAQ sheet.
- Station Setup & Operations: Maintain a professional and organized check-in station, utilizing provided tablecloths, stationery (pens, markers, tape), and mobile communications to ensure a seamless check-in experience.
Requirements:
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Warm, outgoing personality with strong customer service and communication skills.
- Punctuality and commitment to being present for the duration of the entire morning check-in station.
COURSE MARSHALL
Be the eyes, ears, and guiding force of the Alpha 5K Challenge! As a Course Marshall, you play a vital role in ensuring the safety of all participants and maintaining the professional look of our race course. You are responsible for keeping runner flow clear and ensuring that all branding and course markers remain perfectly positioned throughout the event.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible. Your presence on the course is essential to participant safety and event integrity for the entire duration of the race.
Key Responsibilities:
- Course Oversight: Act as a stationed guide to direct runners and ensure the flow of the race remains clear and safe.
- Maintenance & Presentation: Monitor your designated area for any fallen or wind-blown banners, signage, or course markers. You are responsible for correcting any displaced branding to ensure the course looks professional at all times.
- Communication: Maintain active contact with race organizers via your provided handheld radio/walkie-talkie to report any course incidents or needs.
- Safety Standards: Must wear the provided volunteer shirt at all times to be easily identifiable to runners and staff.
Requirements:
- Ability to remain vigilant and attentive during your shift.
- Reliable communication skills for using handheld radios.
- Preparation for outdoor conditions: Volunteers are responsible for bringing their own hydration, sun protection (sunscreen, hat), and a personal chair for comfort during longer stationary periods.
AWARDS OFFICIAL
Be the curator of victory at the Alpha 5K Challenge! As a Timing & Awards Official, you are a pivotal member of our team responsible for maintaining the absolute integrity of our race results and awards ceremony. This sophisticated role requires high attention to detail as you coordinate the identification, recording, and preparation of our top 12 overall finishers across Junior, Open, Masters, and Adaptive categories.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible. Your focused attention on the podium order and participant timing is essential for the duration of the race.
Key Responsibilities:
- Timing & Recording: Monitor the finish line to identify the top three finishers in each category based on their color-coded bibs. You will record the specific times for these 12 individuals rather than the entire field, ensuring accurate data for the awards ceremony.
- Winner Coordination: Act as an official accross the starting line, the finish line, and the awards ceremony. You are responsible for sequestering winning runners, accurately recording their names, and debriefing them on their roles and timing for the upcoming awards ceremony.
- Awards Logistics: Manage the inventory of medal stock and ensure the podium area is organized and ready.
- Photography Support: Manage the designated Photo Op Area to ensure a professional flow for runner and placer portraits. You will work closely with the event photographer to direct winners and prepare them for their official photos, utilizing clear signage and your provided contact list for the photographer.
Requirements:
- A sophisticated, detail-oriented approach to race logistics and record-keeping.
- Strong communication and organizational skills to manage high-stakes moments under pressure.
- Ability to work in a coordinated effort across the race course from start to finish.
PARKING & DIRECTIONS
Be the first point of contact for arrivals and set the tone for a smooth event experience! As a Parking Direction volunteer, you are essential in managing the flow of traffic and ensuring participants are parked efficiently and safely. This role is perfect for early risers who want to contribute to the event's logistics and still have plenty of time to get ready for the race.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is race eligible! You will conclude your duties before the race begins, allowing you sufficient time to prepare for and participate in the Alpha 5K Challenge.
Key Responsibilities:
- Traffic Control: Safely guide arriving participants to designated parking spots using traffic cones and providing clear, professional direction.
- Logistics Management: Utilize provided parking maps to maximize space and ensure the event site remains organized.
- Communication & Coordination: Maintain consistent contact with race management via handheld radio to provide updates on lot capacity and identify when overflow management is required.
- Safety Standards: Must wear the provided volunteer shirt at all times to ensure visibility and safety for yourself and incoming vehicles.
Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk on outdoor terrain for the duration of the shift.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to confidently direct traffic.
- Attention to detail and the ability to follow parking layout plans accurately.
HYDRATION STEWARD
Be the lifeline for our runners! As a Hydration Steward, you are responsible for maintaining the hydration stations that keep our athletes energized and performing at their best. This is a physically active role that requires stamina and a commitment to keeping our course clean and sanitary throughout the race.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible. Your presence and constant attention to the hydration stations are essential for the duration of the event.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hydration Management: Manage and maintain water stations, including the setup of tables and coolers. Ensure a continuous supply of water (bottled or via refill station) and maintain a high volume of cups or bottles for participants.
- Station Maintenance: Keep hydration stations organized and fully stocked throughout your shift.
- Sanitation & Environmental Stewardship: Maintain strict cleanliness around your station by managing trash bins and recycling containers. Use provided cleanup tools (grabbers, gloves) and liners to ensure no litter is left behind, upholding our event's Leave No Trace standards.
Requirements:
- Ability to perform proper lifting and repetitive physical tasks (moving water jugs, coolers, and supplies).
- High energy, stamina, and a proactive approach to maintaining the station.
- Strong commitment to site sanitation and environmental responsibility.
WINNER CIRCLE GUARDIAN
- Be the guardian of the event hub! As a Traffic Control volunteer, you are responsible for the high-level coordination of traffic and stationary assets at the trailhead area. You will manage the flow of vendors, vehicles, and motorcyclist to secure the Winner's Circle. This role is responsible for organizing food trucks and motorcycles, and ensuring the safety and professional presentation of our post-race atmosphere.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 11:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible. Your presence is essential for maintaining secure traffic perimeters and managing the logistics of the event hub for the entire duration of the race.
Key Responsibilities:
- Traffic Management: Define and manage roundabout flow using traffic cones and No Entry barriers to ensure orderly traffic movement.
- Winner's Circle Organization: Strategically organize the placement of food trucks, motorcycles, and other stationary event assets to create a secure, welcoming Winner's Circle for post-race activities.
- Site Security & Redirection: Serve as a traffic point controller to redirect incoming vehicles and maintain a secure perimeter around the awards and event areas.
- Communication: Maintain constant contact with site management via handheld radio to receive traffic updates and coordinate real-time logistics.
Requirements:
- Ability to confidently direct traffic and manage complex site layouts.
- High level of responsibility and the ability to maintain a secure area.
- Must wear a provided high-visibility vest at all times for safety and authority.
RUNNER GROUP COORDINATOR
Be the voice, the hype, and the organizer for our athletes! As a Runner Group Coordinator, you are the quintessential hype person for your assigned category. Your energy will set the tone for the race as you organize runners, manage the starting line, and execute the official group releases in perfect coordination with the race announcer.
Shift Details:
- Time: 6:30 AM – 10:30 AM
- Race Eligibility: This role is NOT race eligible. Your presence is essential for maintaining the organization of race categories and the integrity of the starting sequence for the entire duration of your shift.
Key Responsibilities:
- Category Organization: Use clear signage (e.g., "Adult," "Masters," "Juniors," "Adaptive") to organize runners into their correct groups as they approach the starting line. Verify bib colors and ensure runners are properly identified based on their runner group.
- Crowd Management & Hype: Serve as the primary energy source for your category, using a loud voice to direct the crowd, build excitement, and provide necessary instructions.
- Starting Line Execution: Manage the group staging area and coordinate the precise release of runners with the event announcer to ensure a smooth, professional start for every category.
- Visibility: You must wear provided volunteer shirt to ensure you stand out clearly from the runners and remain easily identifiable to your group and race staff.
Requirements:
- High energy, enthusiasm, and strong leadership skills to motivate and organize participants.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a loud, busy environment.

RACE SUPPORT: BREAKDOWN
Be the backbone of the Alpha 5K Challenge! As a Breakdown Volunteer, you will help transform the event space back to its natural state. This is a high-energy role perfect for spectators, family, or friends who are not running in the event.
Shift Details:
- Time: 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
- Race Eligibility: This role is race eligible, however, we need you to stay motivated! You will be finished with your run, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the post race events, stay warm, and help with breakdown.
Key Responsibilities:
- Physical Infrastructure: Assist in the teardown and pack up of pop-up tents, folding tables, chairs, and signage stands. Ensure all structures are safely stowed for transport.
- Course Remediation: Help collect and pack course infrastructure, including traffic cones, course tape, directional arrows, and mile markers to ensure that we Leave No Trace.
- General Breakdown: Use provided tools (cordless drills, bungee cords, zip ties, duct tape, etc.) to securely teardown and pack up event displays and equipment.
Requirements:
