Description
Now in its 12th year, the Szczerba 5k is a touchstone community event, drawing runners and walkers from across the region to celebrate the memory of Lt. Joseph Szczerba '85, and to support the scholarship that bears his name at Salesianum School.
This family-friendly 5k features ample parking, a great course, great food, great prizes, a huge crowd, and, above all else, a great cause.
About Lt. Joseph Szczerba
Lieutenant Joseph Szczerba ’85, an 18-year veteran of the New Castle County Police Department and a 1985 graduate of Salesianum School, was killed in the line of duty on September 16, 2011. To honor his legacy, Joe's family and friends created a scholarship in his name at Salesianum.
Steeped in humility and filled with gentle strength, Joe was an ideal teammate and leader who never lacked the courage to do what was right. He was a humble, gentle Salesian who paid the ultimate price in the service and protection of others. Joe’s life reminds us that heroism is not forged in tragedy, but rather in doing the little things well with patience and tenacity every day.
The Lt. Joseph Szczerba '85 Memorial Scholarship
The Szczerba Scholarship was originally established by Joe's family friends in the wake of his tragic death. It is now funded annually through the 5k that bears Joe's name, and has grown to become one of the largest endowed scholarships at Salesianum. The corpus of the scholarship is nearly large enough to fund half a tuition for the son of a law enforcement official or first responder.
The 5k is not only an opportunity to build on this success, but also to celebrate the virtues Joe learned as a student here, and to help them take hold of a new generation of Salesian Gentlemen.
