The late Lynn Moore started Saline Crossing as a result of a land donation by Bill White known as Saline Crossing. He was the forerunner who paved the way to build excitement about the potential for restoring the Old River Bridge. Fast forward, many things are happening: step one of the mission statement is almost fulfilled—funding is secured and the Old River Bridge is due to be finished by Spring 2025; step two we are working in conjunction with several key organizations (AR Game and Fish, Saline County, AR Natural Resources, The City of Benton, McClelland Engineers, Saline River Watershed Alliance, to name a few) to develop a river access including a boat ramp and places to bank fish. We are in the process of applying for grants, as you may know, most grants require a match, making raising funds a necessary part of fulfilling this vision. Future plans aren’t set in stone however, an amphitheater, a replica of the Lockhart cabin, and informational or virtual tour plaques are just a few of the ideas that have been kicked around to promote community and appreciation for the historical site.
The mission of Saline Crossing Regional Park & Recreation Area Inc., is to restore and preserve the Old River Bridge, circa 1891, at the historic Saline Crossing site where the Southwest Trail (Military Road) crosses the Saline River; to develop safe, serviceable, and appropriate public access to the Saline River and the historical area; to create a regional park and recreation area along the Saline River; and to promote appreciation for the historical and ecological significance of both Saline Crossing and the Saline River.
