About the Liberty Celebration Swim
The Liberty Celebration Swim is a long-running open water swim event held every summer in Coronado, California, hosted by the Coronado Swim Series and supported by Coronado Swim Team Elite (CSTE). What started as the Rough Water Swim and later became the 4th of July Open Water Swim is now celebrated as the Liberty Celebration Swim, marking over six decades of community tradition and athletic celebration.

The race takes place in Glorietta Bay Park, a scenic, protected bay area with gentle conditions that make it fun and accessible for swimmers of all ages and experience levels. With iconic views of the Coronado Bridge and calm open water, it’s a highlight of Coronado’s Independence Day weekend.

Multiple distances are offered so swimmers can find the right challenge:

250 meter youth dash
Half-mile swim
1-mile race
3 kilometer course
All participants compete by age and gender and receive a finisher medal, swim cap, and event shirt.

Why This Event Matters
The Liberty Celebration Swim isn’t just a race. It’s a community event with deep roots that brings people together around health, purpose, and celebration. Here’s why donors and participants care about it:

Support Youth and Community Swimming
Proceeds help fund Coronado Swim Team Elite (CSTE), a local organization that provides competitive swimming opportunities, coaching, and aquatic development for youth in the region. Supporting this event helps keep programs strong, accessible, and safe for kids and adults alike.

Encourage Active Lifestyles
This swim gives people a goal to train toward and a chance to challenge themselves in open water. Whether it’s a first time swim or a personal best, the event inspires fitness and fun.

Promote Safety and Inclusion
Held in a controlled bay environment with safety crews on site, the swim is a welcoming entry point to open water swimming for new participants while still offering competitive races for experienced swimmers.

Celebrate Community and Tradition
With a history stretching back more than 60 years, this swim has become a local tradition. It’s a chance for generations of swimmers to gather, celebrate freedom, and make memories.
