Sickle Cell in Nigeria and the US

It is estimated that more than 300,000 babies are born with severe forms of hemoglobinopathies worldwide each year. While 75
percent of all patients with SCD live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria alone accounts for more than 150,000 new births every
year.  In America, 1 in every 365 African Americans are living with sickle cell anemia and 1 in 13 children are born with the sickle cell trait.

Nigeria makes up the largest population of individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease in the world, while the needs of sickle cell patients in the US are still present. So what is life like for individuals living with SCD?

Life for individuals living with Sickle Cell

• Children and adolescents living with Sickle Cell Disease miss an average of 15 days or more of school work.
• According to the CDC, Individuals living with Sickle Cell Anemia go to the hospital 3x's / year on average.
• Patients with Sickle Cell wait 25% longer to see a doctor in the ED than do other patients.

What can be done?

UIU CINCY is interested in teaming up with community organizations, businesses, members and leaders to bring awareness to Sickle Cell Anemia prevention, treatment and available resources. We want to begin an initiative that starts in Cincinnati, but continues in Nigeria. Our goal is to bring awareness to Sickle Cell Disease while responding to basic health needs in both communities.

On September 29th UIU CINCY will be hosting a 5K AND COOKOUT at Winton Woods Park at the Ladybug Landing Shelter. We look forward to gathering together in support of individuals affected by SCD. In honor of Sickle Cell Awareness month, UIU CINCY would like to work with you to bring local and international awareness to this condition !
