Beyond the Label: How to Identify and Become a True Pelvic Pain Specialist - Jorge Carrillo, MD, FACOG - IPPS Chairman of the Board, Past President, and Pelvic Pain Specialist Designee and Alex Milspaw, MEd, PhD - IPPS President and Pelvic Pain Specialist Designee
We’ve noticed a significant surge in health professionals—many of whom are talented surgeons or “endometriosis experts” —rebranding themselves as "pelvic pain specialists" without necessarily having the multidisciplinary training required for chronic pelvic pain management. While it's great that more providers are interested in this space, it can create confusing "wild west" for patients. Many are seeking help from these "specialists" only to find their care is limited to one organ system or a surgical approach, leaving the complexities of chronic pain unaddressed.
By shifting the focus, we can provide:
• A Patient Toolkit: Tangible "red flags" and specific questions patients can use to vet a provider’s expertise in chronic pelvic pain.
• A Clinical Roadmap: Guidance for health professionals on how to move beyond a "generalist" or "surgeon" lens to become a true specialist by staying up-to-date with IPPS multidisciplinary standards.
