Safe Roads Alliance, Cambridge Mobile Telematics and other leaders will join for an opening ceremony prior to the start of this first leg of our Cross-Mass Challenge

The 1st leg starts at Tanglewood gates at 10am on May 15th. Leg ends at 109 Mill St in Lee. Sidewalk along Rt 183 until just before road crosses Rt 20. No sidewalk until just before Lenox Dale, then sidewalk on left side for most of route, ends just before taking left onto Washington. Leg ends at intersection with Washington Mountain Rd. Total Distance: 5.17 miles

Relay Leg 2: Lee to Becket

Below is a trail, not a maintained road.

Start at 109 Mill St, and end at 1499 County Rd in Beckett. Washington Mt Rd and County Rd are actually trails thru a state forest - might be challenging for even a mountain bike. (might still be muddy in May). People use this road for 4x4s. Wash-Mt road where it meets County Rd - lots of brook crossings. Very remote, so no EMS. If opting to do this leg, make sure to do it with at least 1 other person. Otherwise, we recommend selecting another leg from the Virtual Options listed due to unsafe road conditions in some areas along this leg.

Start at 1 Brooker Hill Rd in Becket and end at 188 Skyline Trail in Middlefield. All quiet remote dirt roads, no shoulder in spots. Skyline Trail is 40 mph w only small hard shoulder in some areas, so not recommended to do in person for safety reasons. Start at 188 Skyline Trail, Middlefield, end at 569 Skyline Trail in Chester. Cars might speed on this road, only small soft shoulder, some areas with no shoulder and guardrails, so not recommended to do in person for safety reasons.

Leg starts at 372 Main St in Westhampton, and ends at 960 Westhampton Rd in Northampton. No sidewalks for whole route along Rt 66. Wide shoulder, good for biking. Speed limit along route ranges from 25-45mph. Total distance: 4.84 miles

Start: 960 Westhampton Rd End: 170 Pleasant St, Northampton (Amtrak Station). Route starts along Westhampton Rd w some sidewalks. Great sidewalks on Chapel St and then can access the Manhan Rail Trail either via Grove St after Mile 3, or at intersection with Belmont Ave and West st. Ends at Northampton Amtrak Station. On-road route safe. Total distance: 5 miles

Relay Leg 10A + 11A: Northampton to Belchertown via Norwottuck Rail Trail **Long Leg

Relay Leg 10B: Northampton to Hadley, via road

There are 2 options for participating in these legs. Option 2 starts at Northampton Amtrak Station, 170 Pleasant St, and end at 132 Bay Rd in Hadley. Most of route along bike path! Last 1/4 mile of leg on Bay Rd might be unsafe - no shoulder. Total distance 5 miles.

Relay Leg 11B: Hadley to Belchertown, via road

There are 2 options for these legs: Option 2: Start at 132 Bay Rd in Hadley, end at 563 Bay Rd in Belchertown. Moody Bridge Rd mostly rural, some areas of dirt road. Turns into Pomeroy Lane, take until it crosses with Middle St. Take a right, and opportunity to run on trails via map near Plum Pond. Down Chapel Rd to Bay Road where leg ends. Total distance: 5.74 miles

Relay Leg 12: Belchertown to Belchertown

Start at 720 Bay Rd, Amherst, end at 10 N Main, Belchertown. Take Bay Rd to Federal St/Rt 9. Sidewalk starts soon after on R, and continues on L or R. Then turn R onto Rt 202 where there's a sidewalk to end of leg at Fire Station. This route contains some busy roads, and some signaled intersections where we recommend you cross Rt 9 to where the sidewalk resumes on other side. Total distance: 4 miles

Start at 10 N Main St, Belchertown, and end at 507 Cold Spring Rd, Belchertown. Leg starts in town center w sidewalks for 1st mile. Then shoulder along Rt 181, speed limit 35 mph. Cold Spring is narrow country road.

start at 2167 Main St, West Warren, and ends at 299 Long Hill Rd, West Brookfield. Route starts in town center, take Old West Warren Rd to avoid faster Rt 67. When intersects with Main St/Rt 67, sidewalk on both sides until Right turn on East Rd. Quiet narrow rd til end of leg.

*Another option is R on South St, L on Crouch Rd which turns into Reed St, and then L onto Maple St/Rt 19 (no sidewalk or shoulder for the first 1/4 mile, and then sidewalk starts on left and continues into Warren Center. (this route is 6 miles)

Start: 299 Long Hill Rd, West Brookfield and end at 124 Quabog St, Brookfield. Very quiet road for most of leg, brief area at start of Rt 148 w limited shoulder, then sidewalk starts after crossing Quaboag River. Mill St quiet, sidewalk on left after turning onto. Rt 9. Then back to rural road. Total distance: 5.37 miles

34 Oxford Rd, Charlton, to 4 Clara Barton Rd, North Oxford. Entire route follows quiet rural rd, no sidewalks, no shoulders. Some twisty areas in middle of leg, might not be great for cycling unless familiar with area. Speed limit ranges from 20-35 mph. Route starts out on main faster road, but remaining 3 miles are on quiet, narrow country roads. Total distance: 3.94 miles

Relay Leg 21: North Oxford to Auburn

Start: 4 Clara Barton Rd, Oxford End: 12 Paul Revere Rd, Auburn. Sidewalks on Left for first half of route, then turns into country rd w soft shoulders. Just before Cedar St, sidewalk appears again, sidewalk on Left over 395, Cedar St then becomes very rural, South St w little or no shoulder. Some twisty areas, speed limit 30 mph on most of these roads. Total distance: 3.66 miles

Starts at 12 Paul Revere Rd in Auburn, and ends at 63 Canal St, Millbury. Barnes St has soft and hard shoulder, 35 mph, Charleton Rd is narrow and hilly, w no shoulder, 35 mph. Turn Right onto Beach St, which is a slow, residential area. Turn left onto W Main St, which has sidewalk on R and good crosswalks until end in Millbury Center. Total distance: 5 miles

Relay Leg 23: Millbury to Grafton

Start at 63 Canal St, Millbury and end at 24 Stowe Rd in Grafton. Starts w sidewalk on L, and sidewalks along Grafton St for 1st 1/2 mile, then turns to soft shoulder, road 30 mph. Careful crossing Rt 122/Providence Rd (traffic light, but no pedestrian signal or crosswalk). Decent hill here, sidewalk starts soon on left and into Grafton Center. Follow MA-140 S as it curves to the Left. This is a faster rd (40-45 mph) but there's a wide hard shoulder along this stretch. Ends at Stowe Rd. Total distance: 5.63 miles

Start at 25 Stowe Rd, Grafton and end at: 21 Elm St, Upton. Soap Hill Rd is narrow w no shoulder but a quiet road. R onto Orchard St that has 1 twist at end. All narrow country roads. Warren St is a bit hilly and twisty, but generally ok. Be careful crossing some main roads (no crosswalks - High St is busy). Sidewalks in Upton Center and on R along Rt 140. Total distance: 4.39 miles

Start at 21 Elm St in Upton and end at 52 Main St, Milford Town Hall. Mostly all country roads. Christian Hill Rd is pretty twisty and hilly, no shoulder, but quiet road. After turning R onto East St, please use caution, very twisty road w no shoulder, 25 mph. Just before Mile 4 on Congress St, sidewalk on both sides, crosswalks and safe roads to the end of leg in Milford Center. Total distance: 5.6 miles

Start at 52 Main St, Milford and end where bike path stops, Milford/Hopkinton Trail Parking Lot. From Milford Center, this leg is along the Upper Charles Trail. Use caution when crossing under 495, but path is continuous and has good crosswalks here. Trail ends just past mile 4, parking lot parallel to Cedar St/Rt 85. End leg at end of Bike Path. Total distance: 4 miles

Relay Leg 27 Hopkinton to Framingham *Longer Leg

Start at 2 Teresa Rd, Hopkinton, and end at Framingham Commuter Rail Station. After turning onto Chestnut St, sidewalk on left for short distance, then Ash St, Front St, and Olive St are quiet narrow streets with no shoulder. 25 mph. After turning R onto Rt 135, sidewalk starts on left by Ashland Middle School. Then good sidewalks into Ashland Center. Make sure you're on R side of street before fork in the road around mile 5.5. Take the right fork onto E Union St, where sidewalk is on right for all except for approx 1/2 mile. 25-30 mph. Once you turn onto Rt 135 in Framingham, sidewalks the rest of the way to the end. Total distance: 7.95 miles

Relay Leg 28: Framingham to Natick via Cochituate Rail Trail

Start at Framingham MBTA station, end at 316 Bacon St in Natick (on Cochicuate Rail Trail). Also great opportunity for a 2 leg run or bike ride here, as the next leg is nearly all along the bike trail into Wayland. - From MBTA station, continue on Rt 135 for 3 miles. Sidewalk on Right, dedicated bike lane for 1st mile, good crosswalks along this stretch. Goes through commercial area, so just use caution. At intersection with Speen St (Fisk Pond on right), if running, use crosswalk to get to left side of 135, where sidewalk continues. At Eddie's Park, connect with bike path that brings you to Washington St. Turn right, then 1st left onto Cochituate St for start of Cochituate Rail Trail! Total distance: 5 miles

Leg starts at 316 Bacon St along Cochituate Rail Trail. Ends at Russell Garden Center in Wayland. Once rail trail ends at School St,, continue North on Concord St, which has sidewalk on R or L until you take a R on Pelham Island Rd, which is a quiet road with lots of people walking, but it is windy. 25 mph. Total distance: 6.85 miles

Relay Leg 30: Wayland to Waltham via Mass Central Rail Trail

Leg is exclusively on the Mass Central Rail Trail, starting in Rail Trail parking lot off Andrew Ave in Wayland. Trail ends before railroad bridge, leg ends here. (if wanting to continue riding to Waltham for next relay leg, then exit at Church St overpass and go north on Church St, R on North St, and leg ends just after crossing over 95 at intersection of Rt 117 and Stow St. Short section on Rt 117 has no sidewalk, and traffic is a bit fast)

Leg starts at intersection w Main St and Stow St in Waltham. Follow Stow St, and merge onto Weston St, which both have sidewalks.
