Dear Springtime Supporters,
After some time to think through the changes that the last week has brought to our running community and the impacts it has had on our beloved Springtime 10K, Rachel and I, with input from many of you, have decided on a course of action. The Springtime 10K and 5K will go on. We will not succumb to a little bit of uneasiness and disruption. However, we also recognize the threats a large social gathering such as the Springtime 10K creates and will adhere to the government's expert’s suggestions to avoid gatherings of more than 10 people. So…we are going VIRTUAL!!!!
For those already registered, thank you for your support, and we apologize for any inconvenience and disruption cancellation of Springtime has caused. Believe me when I say we share in your frustration and disappointment. The Springtime 10K is Gulf Winds Track Club’s second biggest race each year. Putting on a race this size requires a considerable capital outlay. Prior to cancellation, the race had already spent approximately $17,000 on supplies. We now have approximately 1500 singlets and 1000 medals with an AMAZING logo on them; but no one to give them to.
So, with confidence in our amazing community, both runners and non-runners alike. Here is the plan:
From March 28, 2020, the day Springtime was scheduled, through June 19, 2020, the last day of Spring, runners can run a virtual 5k or 10k on their own (we encourage you to push for the 10K distance). Those already registered are automatically transferred to the virtual run. If you have not already registered, you can sign up for the virtual run (open now) on RunSignup for a flat fee of $17, which will include a race singlet and finisher medal. If you previously registered for the no-shirt option, we will include a shirt if you so choose. You can run anywhere you want, but obey the health directive to keep gatherings to 10 or fewer runners.
After registering and running your race a finishers medal and shirt will be available for you to pick up. All medals and shirts will be left on our front porch at 2513 Chamberlin Road. You are welcome to pick up your medal and shirt at your convenience any time after March 28, 2020. Medals and shirts will be on a first come first serve basis.
While we love the Springtime Courses, we strongly encourage you NOT to run the actual courses for your virtual races due to the amount of traffic. Instead, you are free to run wherever you would like. In an effort to give those looking to race their friends, an alternate Springtime 10K race course will be created on Strava. allowing you to compare your time to those you normally race against on race day. We also encourage all participants to post their race time and route to the Springtime 10K Facebook page.
We recognize that this is not an ideal situation and longingly look forward to next year when we can share a beer with 2000 of our closest friends in the parking lot of the Florida Department of Transportation. Despite the obstacles we want to challenge our running friends to make the best of the situation and sign up to run the virtual race! Support our local track club! Show Covid-19 that we will persevere. Let’s make the 2020 Springtime 10K the best virtual race to have ever taken place in Tallahassee!
