FAQs

For Readers
Q. The readathon has already started – is it too late to join?

A. It's not too late! You can register anytime in April. Just make sure to keep track of the minutes you read and log your reading minutes by May 1st, 2023!

Q. Who can participate?

A. Any student in grades K-8 can participate in the read-a-thon.

Q. Will I have to verify my results?

A. No; the read-a-thon operates on the honor system. We trust everyone to read responsibly!

Q. How do I log minutes?

A. Once signed in, click your profile bubble on the top right of the menu and navigate to Profile. Then, find the Read-a-thon box – on the righthand list of blue links, click Submit Virtual Results.

Q. What happens to proceeds from the read-a-thon?

A. All proceeds will go directly to food assistance programs in Hancock County as a part of the Hancock County Food Drive. The Hancock County Food Drive is an annual food collection and fundraising project that directly supports food pantries, free meal programs, and school backpack programs across Hancock County. With the help of volunteers, these organizations work together to raise funds and collect food, providing critical assistance to Mainers during a time when food insecurity rates are at their highest. Learn more at www.hcfooddrive.org.

Q. I forgot to log my minutes for a couple days – do they still count?

A. They do! Simply change the date to the correct day when you submit your virtual results – you can choose a day that has already passed.

Q. How long after the read-a-thon do I have to log my minutes?

A. You can finish logging your minutes on May 1, 2023.

For Partners and Sponsors

Q. How does the fundraiser work?

A. Sponsors can donate per number of pages the child reads, or make a flat donation. The students will keep track of the number of pages they read throughout the month, and share that number on their individual read-a-thon page. It's up to the sponsor how much they donate per page, when they'll make the donations, or whether they prefer to make a flat donation.

Q. I want to donate to my child's/niece's/student's read-a-thon fundraiser. How can I find their fundraiser?

A. On the Read-a-thon website, select "Donate" from the menu, then select "Donate" from the drop-down menu. Scroll down and you will see the active fundraisers. As long as the student (or their parent) chose to become a fundraiser during registration, they should appear. Then select how much you'd like to donate.

Q. I want to donate to the Read-a-thon but don't know any of the children who are participating. How can I support?

A. You can make a donation to the Read-a-thon as a whole! Just click on "Donate" on the menu and then choose "Donate" from the drop-down menu, and you can make a donation at the bottom. Donations of any size are welcomed and appreciated!

Q. I am a librarian or educator and want to get involved. How can I help?

A. We welcome educators and librarians who are interested in getting involved! Reach out to lucie.nolden@healthyacadia.org to receive a packet of materials you can share with students about the read-a-thon, and share the registration link with any students who want to participate! We also love partnering with educators/librarians who would like to put on an event, such as a story time, at their library or school. Please reach out if you're interested!
