Shoulder Season Stoke

Thu September 1 - Mon October 31 Anchorage, AK 99524 US

Description

Alaskans know how to embrace the joy of every season. To celebrate the transition from summer to winter, the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group (501c3)
is hosting a virtual event where each participant can choose their own target vertical gain to achieve in two months. This vertical challenge, Shoulder Season Stoke, or "SSS" helps support AMRG and, importantly, helps you stay on track as the seasons change. Teams or individual participants are welcome, and we hope you are stoked to support AMRG and get in some vert.

The event runs September 1 through October 31, 2022. Registration has been closed on October 15, however, you could still get a buff for $25 or more donations.

The Shoulder Season Stoke (SSS) is a multi-sport, multi-elevation, shoulder season challenge with the goal to gain your own target elevation in two months. This is not a race against others.

You can walk on a trail, stairs at home, treadmill, or Stairmaster, or run, bike, climb rock or ice or anything else where you can gain vertical feet. You will pick your target vertical feet to accomplish in the months of September and October (61 days). You can choose the peak to meet your goals:

  • Redoubt (10,197’) – daily average 167.2’
  • Denali (20,310’) – daily average 333.0’
  • Everest (29,032’) – daily average 475.9’
  • Seven Summits (140,873’=29,032+22,837+20,310+19,341+16,050+18,510+14,793) – daily average 2,309.4’

For reference, here are some common scenarios to get those metrics tracked!

  • It’s raining every day? You've got 15 minutes while your kid is taking a nap? An average two-story house has 105” tall stairs. Go up and down 20 times, and you get 175’.
  • (Anchorage) Flattop is about 1,200’ elevation gain. Twice a week, and you’ll get to Denali (from the sea level!) easily in two months.
  • (Kenai) Biking or walking Tsalteshi trails adds up to a lot of vertical. If you're looking for a nice view, Skyline is about 2,700’ elevation gain.
  • (Mat-Su Valley) Blueberry Koll is about 1,500’ elevation gain. How about taking your dog for a walk in Crevasse Moraine? Hey, the mosquito season is over!

You will track your vertical elevation gain, log your elevation, and enter it on RunSignup. Invite your friends for a discount, and you could choose to participate as individuals or as a team (up to a group of 4).

Ready to Challenge? If you invite your friend, you will get $5 back! Invite another friend, and you will get another $5 back! Let’s do it with your friends and get matching buffs :)

SWAG

Each registrant gets a buff that could be used as a neck gaiter or a headband, a good item to carry in a shoulder season!

Those who achieved your goal will receive a finisher sticker!
